Exciting Script Update for ’90s Horror Comedy Reboot by Stranger Things Star; Original Cast Member’s Return Is “TBD”

A thrilling update has emerged regarding a forthcoming comedy horror movie reboot, featuring a star from Stranger Things. This wildly successful Netflix series chronicles the eerie encounters of the Hawkins, Indiana community across different generations, with a specific spotlight on young teens and pre-teens. Drawing inspiration from a range of horror, fantasy, and sci-fi sources prevalent in the 1980s, the show amalgamates elements from Dungeons & Dragons as well as notable narratives crafted by Stephen King and Steven Spielberg.

Even as Stranger Things continues its journey, many cast members have pursued roles in the horror genre during the show’s lengthy breaks. Notable performances include David Harbour, who portrayed Santa in the film Violent Night; Sadie Sink, in the slasher flick Fear Street Part Two: 1978; Finn Wolfhard appeared in the adaptation of Henry James’ The Turning; and Joe Keery, who took on the role of a sinister rideshare driver in Spree. With an expanding repertoire of horror films, the cast is now adding a reboot of a 1990s cult classic to their list of projects.

In a recent announcement from November 2024, Finn Wolfhard is set to return to the horror landscape by co-writing a remake of the 1999 cult film Idle Hands alongside Billy Bryk, with indications that he might also co-direct the project. The original movie featured a slothful teenager, played by Devon Sawa, whose hand becomes possessed by a murderous demon. The original cast was notable as it included talented actors like Seth Green, Jessica Alba, Vivica A. Fox, Sean Whalen, and Fred Willard.

Despite Idle Hands being a modest box office performer, raking in just $4.2 million against its $25 million production cost, it has since garnered a devoted fan base, solidifying its status as a cult classic.

In a conversation with ComicBook, Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk shared where things stand with the reboot and hinted at the potential return of Sawa. Although the specifics regarding the direction and Sawa’s involvement remain undetermined, both expressed enthusiasm about the script. They described the project as a “cool, full circle moment,”particularly because the original film was a significant influence on their latest collaborative effort, Hell of a Summer, which stars Abby Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. Their complete remarks are as follows:

Finn Wolfhard: TBD. TBD on [our directorial role and whether Devon Sawa returns], I would say.

Billy Bryk: We’re just super excited about the script, the story, and the concept. Sawa is a legend, and his performance in that initial movie was remarkable… It feels like a fantastic full circle moment to be developing a reimagined version of Idle Hands.

The tone of Wolfhard and Bryk’s comments suggests that the development of this horror film is still in early stages, leaving many details up in the air. However, if the project progresses as planned, the return of Sawa remains a valid possibility. He has consistently embraced horror roles since the late 90s, most recently participating in the film Heart Eyes and portraying multiple characters in the Chucky series. Furthermore, in 2020, he expressed his desire to explore a sequel, stating, “if there was one film I want to do a sequel to, it would be Idle Hands.”
