Exciting Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Spin-Off Announced

Mobile Suit Gundam has made its mark primarily through various anime series, yet the franchise’s reach extends well into the realm of manga. Among its latest ventures is a new installment that builds upon the groundbreaking narrative introduced in The Witch From Mercury anime series.

Recently, the official account for The Witch From Mercury on X, @G_Witch_M, shared an exciting announcement: the debut of a new manga titled Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury – Youth Frontier will take place in Spring 2025. This upcoming manga is not simply an adaptation of its popular anime counterpart; rather, it serves as a spin-off narrative that focuses on its central characters, Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran. Unlike the original series, which unfolds at the Asticassia School of Technology, this new tale will be set in a Japanese high school on Earth.

A New Manga That Delves Into Key Themes of the Original Series

The Relationship Between Suletta and Miorine: A Central Focus

Marketed as a captivating tale set in Japan’s near future, the announcement left many of its plot details ambiguous. However, it did unveil the primary creative team, which is closely associated with The Witch From Mercury franchise. Writer HISADAKE, who has previously held various roles in the Witch of Mercury anime, will lead this new series. Fans can expect its debut exclusively on Comic Newtype, a digital platform under Kadokawa Publishing.

Illustrating the series will be Hata Hiro, an accomplished artist known for his romantic comedy manga Misumi-san wa Misukasenai and the supernatural thriller InuYuu, Dogs and Heroes Don’t Dress Up. While Hata does not have a prior connection to the Witch From Mercury anime, his deep appreciation for the series shines through as he recently shared a preview image featuring Suletta and Miorine on his X account @manbou_ane.

The Witch From Mercury: A Milestone in the Gundam Franchise

Premiering in October 2002 and concluding in July 2003, The Witch From Mercury anime spanned two seasons. This series distinguished itself within the Gundam franchise by being the first to feature a female lead. Additionally, it broke new ground by introducing LGBTQ characters who ultimately tie the knot by the end of the story.

Such innovations, coupled with a unique narrative approach—like Suletta’s backstory of never having visited Earth—position The Witch From Mercury as one of the most compelling entries in the Gundam universe. The forthcoming manga seeks to uphold this spirit of innovation. Instead of a space-centric narrative, it envisions the protagonists as high school students on Earth. Only time will tell how else this new installment will reshape the Gundam lore.
