The topic of political assassination is serious and deserves respectful discussion. However, Elon Musk seems to find humor in the notion of harming Kamala Harris. It’s noteworthy how Musk’s jokes would likely differ had the subject been Donald Trump.
During a conversation with Tucker Carlson, Musk openly endorsed Trump’s political stance. Carlson initiated their discussion by dismissing Harris as “irrelevant.” Musk joined in, quipping that “no one even thinks about killing Kamala since it’s pointless.” Carlson found it amusing, calling it “deep and true,” to which Musk responded that if an incident did occur, the opposition could simply “acquire another puppet.”

It appears that Musk and Carlson were the only ones amused by the remark. Discontent emanated from other Republicans, with one tweet stating, “You’d be banned from this platform immediately if you made a similar comment regarding Elon Musk.”

Political violence must not become commonplace
Musk clarified his intent was not to incite violence against the Vice President, yet his statement raises eyebrows. To suggest that a political figure is significant only if there is a threat against them is troubling. Based on such a disconcerting premise, Harris is certainly not without peril. In early 2024, a Virginia man issued death threats against her, asserting intentions to “shoot, stab, and burn” her alive.
Musk’s justifications paint a picture where political violence is alarmingly normalized in the U.S. The issue of political violence is escalating due to inflammatory rhetoric and falsehoods. Many of Trump’s supporters resisted the inauguration of the Biden-Harris administration, viewing them as significant figures who incited their ire. Dissemination of propaganda and misinformation has fueled attacks on democratic institutions and fostered acts of stochastic terrorism. Those radicalized perceive political actors as impactful and consequential.
Fortunately, Harris has not been harmed. Her performance in presidential debates has showcased her capabilities. She should not have to fall victim to gun violence to be deemed ‘relevant’ by these two wealthy individuals.
