Plot Overview: A Youth Hockey Team’s Journey

At its core, Smudge the Blades follows the journey of the Treaty 6 Blades, an under-18 hockey team based on a reservation. The film captures the team’s efforts to optimize their last year of eligibility in a fiercely competitive league situated in northern Alberta. The challenges they face reflect not only personal growth but also cultural pride and community strength.

Cody Lightning’s Vision for Indigenous Hockey

“Rez hockey in Canada is bigger than high school football in Texas,” Lightning expressed, highlighting the significance of hockey in Indigenous cultures. He stated, “I’m so honored to have this incredible cast to bring to life the experiences of Indigenous hockey players, on and off the ice.” This film aims to shed light on the realities and struggles faced by Indigenous athletes as well as their triumphs.

Meet the Young Cast of Rising Stars

In an extensive casting process, several young Indigenous actors were selected to portray members of the Treaty 6 Blades. These talents include Treycen Wuttunnee, Isaiah Kakepetum, River Rayne Thomas, Elijah James Lee Moar, Ezekiel James Mekanek, and Tyler Halcrow. Lightning himself takes on the character of Willie Gladue, a Zamboni driver who unexpectedly finds himself coaching the team while also vying for the affection of a hockey mom portrayed by Schmieding.

Cody Lightning’s Transition to Feature Directing

Smudge the Blades marks Lightning’s second feature film following his directorial debut with Hey, Viktor!, a mockumentary that debuted at the Tribeca Festival in 2023 and later screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, where it received three nominations for the Canadian Screen Awards.
