Academic and Athletic Foundations
Born and raised in Southern California, Arnold started his higher education at Santa Ana College before transferring to California State University, Long Beach. There, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in speech, focusing on radio, television, and film. His athletic involvement includes being a member of the Santa Ana Dons’ football team that won the 1961 Eastern Conference Championship, demonstrating his multifaceted talents from an early age.
Career Milestones in Broadcasting
Arnold began his broadcasting journey at several radio stations throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. His pivotal role as an announcer and later sportscaster at KTLA began in the late 1960s, a position he held until 1975. Afterward, he became a vital part of KABC-TV’s Eyewitness News team until 1986. Throughout his career, Arnold also notably served as the voice for public TV station KCET, contributed as a sports personality at KRLA, KHTZ, and KMPC, and co-hosted PBS SoCal/KOCE-TV’s Real Orange. Furthermore, he lent his voice to the internationally acclaimed Hour of Power religious program and eventually returned to KTLA, where he served until 1999.
Recognitions and Community Involvement
Arnold’s dedication to his profession earned him numerous accolades, including his induction into the Santa Ana College Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service in 2009, followed by similar recognition from Vanguard University in 2011. His commitment extended beyond broadcasting; he played a significant role in the Santa Ana College Foundation as president and chairman, actively engaged in raising scholarships for student athletes, and had the SAC golf tournament renamed in his honor as the Ed Arnold Golf Classic in 2003. Additionally, he frequently emceed events at Vanguard University, where his wife, Dixie, has held a longstanding position as chair of the Liberal Studies Department. The couple’s legacy continues, as they are recognized with their name on the Vanguard University Lyceum Theater, established in 2014.
A Lasting Community Impact
In addition to his broadcasting achievements, Arnold was a regular participant in gatherings organized by the News Geezers, a collective of mainly retired news and broadcasting professionals in Southern California. Unfortunately, health challenges later curtailed his attendance at these events.

Arnold is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Dixie, along with their son Dean, daughter-in-law Rachel, and two grandchildren, Jacob and Luke. His family, friends, and admirers will forever remember him for his immense contributions to broadcasting and his profound impact on the community.
