“Eager to Revive a Show”: The Walking Dead Franchise Leader Aims to Bring Back Fan-Favorite Series, Aware of Audience Interest

Scott M. Gimple, the chief creative officer of the The Walking Dead franchise, has recently indicated his strong desire to revive one specific spinoff series, asserting that the audience shares his enthusiasm. Since the conclusion of the flagship series in 2022, multiple spinoffs have emerged, including three that continue the storyline directly from the original show. Currently, two of these, Dead City and Daryl Dixon, are in progress, while another, The Ones Who Live, culminated after its first season. Notably, this isn’t the only expansion of the franchise; several other spinoffs were launched even during the airing of the main series.

In an exclusive conversation with The Direct, Gimple expressed his fondness for the anthology spinoff, Tales of the Walking Dead, which premiered in 2022. While he mentioned there are currently no “imminent plans”to bring the show back, he is optimistic about its potential popularity. The anthology format, where each episode centers around a different group of survivors, lends itself to easier revival possibilities compared to traditional series. Here’s what Gimple had to share:

I’m desperate to do more of those. We don’t have imminent plans to do it, but I’m constantly, constantly, constantly bringing it up. It’s a more challenging show because of the variety, because you’re starting at zero every episode. So that’s one thing that’s sort of slowing it down a little bit. But I always keep it in the mix as a possibility. We can only put out so many Walking Dead shows, Walking Dead hours a year. But to me, I think that’s a layup. I think everybody wants to see more stories of it and I think we totally just scratched the surface. And on top of that, I really want to see more of the characters from the past and I know the audience does too. Or things that were referred to in the past that we never saw. So, I’m determined to have it come back and it’s a very easy show to come back. There’s no… you know, we didn’t end on a cliffhanger. So I think it’s a possibility.

Implications of Gimple’s Vision for Tales of the Walking Dead

Initial Plans Revealed in 2023

The first season of Tales of the Walking Dead debuted in 2022, showcasing six unique stories from various survivors, each set in distinct moments of the zombie apocalypse. Among its highlights was a character-driven episode centered on Alpha (portrayed by Samantha Morton) that explored her journey to becoming the leader of the Whisperers. The series garnered generally favorable reviews from critics upon release. In April 2023, an additional series titled More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe was announced, which is anticipated to include another six episodes focusing on individual survivor narratives.

Despite the initial enthusiasm, Gimple’s recent comments suggest that reviving the anthology series may not be an immediate priority for the franchise. Upcoming spinoff seasons, including Dead City Season 2 premiering on May 4, 2025, and Daryl Dixon Season 3 arriving later that year, seem to be taking precedence. Although a follow-up series is on Gimple’s radar, the interest appears to be overshadowed by the last legacy stories currently unfolding.

A Longer Wait Likely Ahead

Given Gimple’s evident passion for the idea, it appears that Tales of the Walking Dead has a viable path to re-emergence within the franchise’s timeline. However, with two active series airing this year, the earliest possibility for the anthology’s return might be targeted for 2026. For now, the future of this spinoff remains uncertain as it competes with ongoing narratives, but the unique themes and characters it introduced suggest that it could make a compelling comeback in the future.
