Double U-turn Detour Explained: The Amazing Race Season 37, Episode 5 Recap and Insights

On April 2, 2025, The Amazing Race Season 37 rolled out its fifth episode, titled It’s Not Personal, It’s Business. This thrilling episode took place in the captivating surroundings of Bali, Indonesia, where teams continued their journey from the previous week. A major twist, known as the double U-Turn Detour, resulted in the elimination of contestants Scott and Lori, adding unexpected stakes to the competition.

Host Phil Keoghan introduced an intriguing new twist prior to the next challenge—a vote determining which teams would face setbacks. The two teams with the highest votes would be forced into the double U-Turn Detour, which required them to complete both tasks while allowing other teams to face only one. This quirky rule kept players on their toes and ratcheted up the intensity.

Challenge Dynamics in Episode 5 of The Amazing Race Season 37

Scott and Lori underestimated the dynamics of alliances in the race, believing their strong relationships with other cast members would shield them from voting. To their surprise, they received equal votes with Jonathan and Ana, placing them both at a strategic disadvantage. Given their track record, it was clear that other teams aimed to upend what they perceived as a dominance by the frontrunners.

Upon learning the voting results, Lori expressed her feelings of betrayal, noting that she reevaluated her friendships with fellow contestants who had cast votes against her. Scott, exhibiting visible emotion, likened the experience to being rejected by sons, highlighting the personal connections forged during the competition. Despite attempts from Mark and Brett to clarify their reasons for voting, Scott and Lori remained unresponsive.

All teams converged at Pantai Pandawa Beach, where they were faced with a choice between a coconut or a coral Detour. Unfortunately, Scott, Lori, Jonathan, and Ana had to tackle both tasks. The coconut Detour involved tossing 60 green coconuts from one area of the beach to a nearby café on bicycles, while the coral challenge required the attachment of five coral species onto a structure before placing it on the seabed to foster ecological growth.

Jonathan and Ana faced an emotional hurdle when it came to the coral task; Ana’s fear of deep water, stemming from a childhood near-drowning incident, made the challenge particularly daunting. Nonetheless, donning a life vest, she persevered. Initially thinking the coconut challenge would be less grueling, she soon realized the relentless heat turned it into a formidable endeavor as well.

Despite their concerns about speed, Jonathan and Ana found solace in the knowledge that Scott and Lori were making similar errors during their coral Detour. In a nail-biting conclusion, Jonathan and Ana edged ahead by mere minutes, ultimately sending Scott and Lori home.
