Dolly Parton Explains Her Reluctance to Judge on American Idol
Fans of American Idol may find themselves disappointed with Dolly Parton’s refusal to join the judging panel. In an exclusive interview with E! News on May 9, 2025, the legendary 79-year-old singer shared her reasons for consistently declining opportunities to participate in the show.
Dolly revealed that despite numerous invites over the years, she has no intention of stepping into the role of judge. Her reasoning is straightforward:
“It’s too hard for me. That’s why I don’t accept it. And I just can’t hurt people,”

Although she has never formally judged on American Idol, Dolly did serve as a guest mentor during season 7 in 2008, guiding aspiring artists like David Cook. “I know how sincere everybody is,”

“I started seeing cars coming in, and I remember how exciting that feeling was when the parking lot filled up,”
