Disney Executive Shares Candid Insights on Doctor Odyssey Season 2

Doctor Odyssey season 2 remains a topic of interest among fans, especially after comments from a top Disney executive regarding the show’s uncertain future. Set on a luxurious cruise ship, this medical drama is now the last scripted series on ABC awaiting clarity on its renewal. Earlier, the network confirmed that popular shows like Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1, and The Rookie, along with new titles such as Will Trent and the comedy Shifting Gears, would return for new seasons. In stark contrast, the fate of Doctor Odyssey hangs in the balance primarily due to its disappointing ratings and high production expenses.

In a recent interview with Variety, Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, conveyed his admiration for Doctor Odyssey. He indicated ongoing discussions with co-creator Ryan Murphy about the potential direction of season 2. Erwich highlighted Murphy’s involvement with various other projects, which complicates the timeline for future episodes:

We love “Doctor Odyssey.” We’re still having creative conversations about the show with Ryan and evaluating. Ryan is very busy. He is working on a ton with us right now: “9-1-1,” which continues to be one of the No. 1 shows on television. We just gave an expanded order to “9-1-1: Nashville.” We have Chris O’Donnell in that. I think it’s a really unique setting for our flagship franchise. We just launched “Mid-Century Modern.” So, as he should be, he’s quite busy doing excellent work for us. Ultimately, we’re going to take our lead from Ryan about what that next chapter of “Doctor Odyssey” looks like. But we’re having creative conversations about it right now. He’s an amazing partner.

Potential for a Last-Minute Renewal

The series has a better chance of being renewed if it resembled a typical network procedural format. Doctor Odyssey stars Joshua Jackson along with a handful of well-known actors such as Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson, and it also features guest appearances from celebrities like Shania Twain and Kathryn Newton. Despite its star-studded line-up, viewership has been declining significantly since its debut, with some episodes struggling to retain half their initial audience.

Renewal decisions will likely hinge on the balance between production costs and audience engagement. Currently, the metrics do not favor the continuation of this medical drama. However, there’s still a possibility that Disney executives may opt to renew it to sustain a healthy relationship with its creative team.

Need for a Creative Revision

The production, by 20th Television and helmed by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, currently lacks a captivating narrative hook. With episodes that frequently feel like light-hearted, whimsical stories centered on one-off guest stars, the overarching plot remains unimpressive. The series mostly revolves around a lackluster love triangle that fails to draw in viewers.

Attention to creative development may be the key to revitalizing interest in Doctor Odyssey. Engaging storytelling could entice viewers back and potentially develop new plotlines, perhaps even down the line leading to a renewal.

Doctor Odyssey airs Thursdays at 9 PM ET on ABC and is also available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
