Diana Sanchez Appointed Executive Director of Hot Docs Festival After Serving as Senior Programmer in Toronto

Diana Sanchez Appointed Executive Director of Hot Docs Canadian Documentary Festival

The Hot Docs Canadian Documentary Festival, known as North America’s largest documentary festival, has announced the appointment of veteran film programmer Diana Sanchez as its new executive director. This announcement comes at a crucial time for the festival, as it prepares for its upcoming 2025 edition scheduled to take place from April 24 to May 4.

Transition in Leadership

Sanchez, who previously served as the senior director of film and international programming at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF), succeeds Janice Dawe, the interim executive director who has guided Hot Docs through a challenging period, marked by significant fiscal adjustments. Under Dawe’s leadership, the festival has navigated challenges attributed to post-pandemic financial struggles, including the closure of its flagship cinema in Toronto and a significant reduction in its board of directors.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the role, Sanchez stated, “I’m thrilled to be joining the Hot Docs team at such a pivotal moment. Storytelling has the power to rediscover, reimagine and bring fresh perspectives to the world around us. In that same spirit, Hot Docs is stepping into an exciting new chapter — one of growth, transformation, and renewed vision.”

A Rich Background in Film Curation

With a robust background in film programming, Sanchez has made her mark at various prestigious film festivals, including the Madrid Film Archive, the Rotterdam Film Festival, and the Miami Film Festival. Notably, she also served as the artistic director for the Los Angeles Latino Film Festival and was the founding artistic director of IFF Panama. Starting March 31, she will take the lead at the annual Hot Docs Festival, as well as the associated industry conference and market set to run from April 28.

Future Vision for Hot Docs

Hot Docs co-chair Nicholas de Pencier expressed confidence in Sanchez’s leadership, noting, “Diana brings passion, vast experience in the industry, and an unwavering commitment to the power that film has to bring people together and effect positive change. We look forward to her vital contribution in reshaping Hot Docs’ future, strengthening our Festival and Cinema, and continuing to champion filmmakers in Canada and beyond.”

The complete film lineup for the 2025 Hot Docs festival is anticipated to be announced on March 25, building anticipation for a revitalized event.
