Diablo 4 Acknowledges Fan Feedback on Paladin Class: 2026 Expansion Insights

In a recent 2024 conversation, Brent Gibson, the Game Director for Diablo 4, indicated a potential revival of the fan-favorite Paladin class. Alongside Systems Designer Aislyn Hall, he elaborated on the introduction of the Spiritborn, which distinguishes itself from the traditional sword-and-board Paladin. This shift is particularly fitting considering that the upcoming expansion is set in the lush jungles of Nahantu, rather than simply rehashing the familiar Paladin.

This was an opportunity for Blizzard to innovate, giving rise to an engaging class like the Spiritborn—initially perceived as overwhelmingly powerful, its balance has since been adjusted. The question arises: is it time for Diablo 4 to reintroduce the Paladin? Developers are tuning into community feedback and, while a return may not be imminent, 2026 might just be the year for this beloved class.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Gibson acknowledged the players’ longing for the Paladin yet explained why the Spiritborn was the chosen direction. He emphasized,

“But, you know, bringing something new, this was the time to do it, right? Five originals. It’s like doing a sixth original. We could do that, but the team wanted the opportunity to go big.”

Why 2026 is the Ideal Moment for the Paladin’s Comeback

The rationale behind prioritizing the Spiritborn over a traditional Paladin was multifaceted. Primarily, Blizzard had already introduced five classic classes to the game, and the developers strived to innovate rather than simply reintroduce familiar characters.

Rather than recycling old content, Blizzard sought to create something unique—resulting in the well-received Spiritborn. Nonetheless, they recognize the demand from the community for a Paladin and aim to make a significant impact with future expansions.

Although the exact features of the next Diablo 4 expansion remain under wraps, it certainly presents another opportunity to integrate the Paladin class. The expectation is that the 2026 expansion could serve as the perfect setting for this revered character’s return, which has been hinted at in the recently released 2025/2026 Roadmap.

The confirmation of the 2026 expansion suggests exciting developments, including the mysterious “New? ??” possibly hinting at a new class debut. Considering the narrative trajectory involving the Church discussed in the Vessel of Hatred expansion, reintroducing the Paladin seems not only plausible but necessary.

Akarat, a pivotal figure akin to a divine savior within the Diablo lore, has had his remains misappropriated by Mephisto, potentially escalating the need for a Paladin’s intervention. With religious themes likely pervading the 2026 expansion, if there were ever a moment to resurrect the Paladin, it would be now.

Feedback regarding the 2025 roadmap has been mixed, with some critics suggesting the upcoming seasonal content may feel repetitive. Coupled with less captivating seasons in 2024, the strategic introduction of the Paladin could reinvigorate interest and entice returning players.
