Overview

  • Dennis Shirk has lauded the enhanced hardware of the Nintendo Switch 2, emphasizing its capacity to improve graphics and performance in Civilization 7.
  • The new console’s capabilities are comparable to a mid-range gaming PC.
  • Players can expect a significantly improved experience with Civilization 7 on Switch 2 compared to the original Nintendo Switch version.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has generated excitement in the gaming community, particularly among fans of the acclaimed series Civilization. Dennis Shirk, the executive producer at Firaxis Games, has enthusiastically shared insights about the game’s forthcoming release on the new console. He highlights the impressive graphics and performance enhancements, likening them to what players would experience on a mid-tier gaming PC.

The highly anticipated Civilization 7 was officially announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 during the Nintendo Direct event on April 2. Originally set to launch across multiple platforms, including the original Switch, in February, this installment in the iconic 4X strategy series introduces innovative features such as an overhauled Ages mechanic and the flexibility to mix different civilizations and leaders.

Shirk’s optimism about the Switch 2 comes as no surprise, especially in light of reports suggesting the incorporation of Nvidia’s Tegra chip, which purportedly provides tenfold graphics performance compared to the original device. In an interview with Stephen Totillo from GameFile, Shirk shared his excitement about the improved performance of the Switch 2 version of Civilization 7, stating, “We were able to make this look like a mid-tier PC, because it’s got enough power.” He also noted that the development team is “very happy”with how the game runs on the new console.

Upon its initial release in February, Civilization 7 received generally favorable critiques; however, player feedback has been mixed. A common theme in the criticism has been the removal of beloved features from earlier installments. Nintendo Switch players have specifically pointed out significant performance challenges, including crashes and protracted waiting periods between turns. Many have reported needing to limit their gameplay—such as avoiding larger maps and restricting the number of civilizations—so as not to overwhelm the Switch’s hardware limitations. Nonetheless, the capacity to enjoy Civilization 7 while on the move is a feature that resonates well with players, and enhancements in performance are likely to be warmly received.

In addition to graphical improvements, other features are being refined for this release. Shirk, alongside lead designer Ed Beach, has commended the Joy-Con’s mouse capabilities, which are expected to simplify navigation within Civilization 7 for Switch 2 users. Given the franchise’s roots in PC gaming, this adaptation could significantly enrich the gaming experience on the console.
