Department of Homeland Security Evaluates Proposal for U.S. Citizenship Competition Reality Show

Department of Homeland Security Evaluates Reality Show Proposal on U.S. Citizenship

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently reviewing an intriguing reality television show concept, The American, pitched by Rob Worsoff, known for his work on Duck Dynasty and The Millionaire Matchmaker. This show aims to spotlight the journey to U.S. citizenship through a series of competitive challenges.

Concept Overview

Worsoff announced the show’s premise on Facebook, emphasizing that it is designed to evoke pride and celebration of American values during a time when national morale is reportedly low. He described The American as a cheerful exploration of what it means to be an American, avoiding any negative or hostile undertones.

DHS Response to the Proposal

Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at DHS, confirmed that the show is in the initial phases of a comprehensive vetting process. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, she noted, “The Department of Homeland Security receives hundreds of television show pitches annually, which are subjected to a rigorous evaluation before any decisions are made.”

As per McLaughlin’s remarks, the proposal for The American has not yet been accepted or rejected as it progresses through the evaluation stages.

Speculations and Production Details

The Daily Mail was the first media outlet to break the story, suggesting that Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is a supporter of the project. However, McLaughlin rejected claims of Noem’s direct involvement.

Although Worsoff stated he has yet to communicate with Noem, he has been collaborating with her associates at DHS. He reflected on pitching the idea during previous administrations, noting, “It was never a definitive NO; it was always about timing.”

Participation and Format

Worsoff, who immigrated from Canada, elaborated on the concept to the Wall Street Journal, stating that the show would include contestants engaging in quintessentially American tasks. These could involve activities such as mining for gold in San Francisco or assembling a Model T in Detroit.

A Shift in Messaging

Under the Trump administration, DHS invested millions in advertisements featuring Noem encouraging undocumented immigrants to “leave now.” In contrast, Worsoff’s vision for The American aims to foster a positive narrative about immigration. He assured that any setbacks presented in the show’s challenges would not influence participants’ actual citizenship processes.

Worsoff envisions the show as a heartwarming series filled with emotional moments and lighthearted American-themed challenges, both mental and physical. He expressed enthusiasm for future updates on the project’s progress, stating, “I look forward to more updates on this in the future.”
