Recap of Episode 5: The Amazing Race Season 37 in Bali
On April 2, the fifth episode of The Amazing Race Season 37 transported audiences to the vibrant landscapes of Bali, Indonesia. Following the previous episode, where contestants Bernie Gutierrez and Carrigain Scadden were eliminated for finishing last, this week’s installment witnessed Scott and Laurie bidding farewell to the competition.
The Voting Twist
As the remaining nine teams gathered, host Phil Keoghan introduced an unexpected voting twist that would shape the course of the episode. Each team was tasked with voting for two pairs to receive a double U-turn—an element designed not for elimination, but to create strategic hurdles for the chosen contestants.
Controversial U-Turns Emerge
Ultimately, Jonathan and Ana, along with Scott and Laurie, received the most votes, earning them the U-turn disadvantage. Scott and Laurie appeared blindsided by the outcome, expressing disbelief at being targeted despite their performance. Laurie voiced her disconnection with the other contestants, while Scott lamented, feeling as though he had been let down by his “eight sons.”Unfortunately for them, this strategic setback led to their eventual elimination from the race.
Fan Reactions on Social Media
The fallout from the U-turn drew a flurry of responses from the show’s fans on X, showcasing a mix of humor and criticism:
“Scott and Lori are either great actors or delusional,”a fan said.
“Need Scott and Lori off my screens immediately like you can tell they use this guilt trippy personality on their kids,”said another.
“WELL SCOTT & LORI…… YALL ARE SURE IN FOR A SURPRISE,”added a third.
“Scott and Lori are the type of people who think they’re so sweet and nice, and believe everyone likes them,”wrote another.
Responses to Their Elimination
Many viewers pointed out that Scott and Laurie’s past performances made them prime targets:
“Scott, Laurie, Jonathan, & Ana being surprised is so silly. You’re constantly in the top 3,”an X user wrote.
“If Scott thinks he wouldn’t be U-Turned by his 8 sons, he should’ve played #TheAmazingRace in his backyard instead of the real world version where he’s playing against strangers for $1 million,”wrote another.
“Scott & Laurie and Jonathan & Ana being shocked and surprised they got u-turned is hilarious,”commented one.
“Jonathan and Ana AND Scott and Laurie get U-turned. Absolutely not shocked by this. But it was fun seeing Scott and Laurie freak out,”wrote another.
Challenges Faced by the Teams
Following the U-turns, the teams received their next clue directing them to Pantai Padhva Beach. Here, they encountered two Detour challenges: one involving the transportation of 60 coconuts to a café, and the other focusing on constructing a cage with five coral species for release into the ocean. While most teams tackled only one challenge, Scott and Laurie, as well as Jonathan and Ana, were required to complete both due to their U-turn status.
Scott and Laurie opted to prioritize the coconut delivery, believing it would provide them with an advantage. However, after the Detour tasks, they found themselves in the last position upon arrival at the subsequent Roadblock challenge, finishing just minutes behind Jonathan and Ana.
