In Deltarune Chapter 1, players encounter a hidden boss that adds an exciting challenge to the gameplay. Developed by Toby Fox, known for his previous hit, Undertale, Jevil is a formidable secret boss that many players might overlook during their initial exploration. As we anticipate the release of Chapters 3-5, now is the perfect time to delve into the secrets the existing chapters offer, particularly the fierce battle against Jevil.
To challenge Jevil, players must first locate him. He resides within the Castle, specifically at the end of Chapter 1. However, before facing this hidden nemesis, you will need to collect all three keys to unlock the door leading to him. Although it might seem daunting, there are strategies to effectively defeat Jevil that will make the battle manageable.
Unlocking the Secret Boss in Deltarune Chapter 1
Gathering the Broken Keys to Free Jevil

To locate Jevil, start by clearing the Castle Dungeon. Proceed past the shop and take the elevator up to the first floor. From there, head down and right to find another elevator marked ‘????’. Descend to uncover the path leading directly to Jevil.
Once you encounter Jevil, he will inform you of the need to acquire a key to unlock the door. This Broken Key can be obtained from Seam, the shopkeeper, located in the field area. Engage him and select the “Strange Prisoner”dialogue option to receive this crucial item needed for entry.
After acquiring the Broken Key, you will be guided to locate its remaining fragments. For the first piece, fast-travel to the Bake Sale and move left past the two Bloxers. You’ll soon come across a room filled with black and white dancers that block your way. Navigate southward until you notice Kris seemingly walking off the path into mid-air.
Continue forward on this secret path until you arrive at a new area where you can encounter Rabbicks for battles. Follow the route to discover the second piece of the key.
The third piece is situated in the Field. Fast travel to this point and head right until you reach a previously encountered puzzle. This time, configure the combination to Diamond, Heart, Clover, and Spade to unlock the last piece of the key.
With all the pieces in hand, it’s time to fix the key. Return to the Bake Sale, where you will find Smith Malius, who can repair the broken key parts found in your inventory.
Now equipped with a functional key, you’re prepared to confront Jevil. Before heading into battle, stop by the shop to stock up on healing items to ensure your team’s survival. Make your way back to the elevator marked with question marks and approach the gate to commence the fight with Deltarune’s elusive boss.

Navigating Jevil’s Fast Projectiles and High Defense Stats

Approach this battle equipped with ample healing consumables to keep your entire party healthy, as Jevil’s attacks can be challenging to dodge and may incapacitate unprepared characters. Additionally, formulating your party with members who possess balanced Defense stats will bolster your team’s endurance during the fight.
Fortunately, Jevil’s attacks come with text cues that offer insights into his next moves, aiding in your dodge strategy. The table below outlines Jevil’s dialogue cues along with his respective attacks, giving you a tactical edge. Remember, mastering these attacks may take a bit of practice, so don’t get discouraged if you need several attempts.
Dialogue | What Jevil Does |
---|---|
Catch me if you can. | Jevil teleports around the screen, launching spades rapidly. Stay nimble and adapt to his attack timing. |
Having fun yet, join the club. | Clubs fly in from both sides. They approach quickly, be cautious of their trajectory. |
Let’s make the Devilsknife. | A knife appears in a square formation. You can dodge this by moving to the center and oscillating between the screen’s edges. |
Let’s ride the carousel game. | Diagonal horses traverse the screen; avoid the corners to stay safe. |
My hearts go out to all the sinners. | Hearts spiral across the screen in pairs. Watch closely to time your movements precisely as they attack. |
Shall we play around? | Jevil fires spiraling spades. This is a significant attack—keep your distance to evade damage. |
Upon successfully dodging his previous moves, Jevil will activate his desperation mode. During this phase, all his attacks unleash simultaneously, increasing the difficulty dramatically. The combat box will vanish, as knives rain down from above. This phase allows greater freedom of movement, which is key to dodging the deadly projectiles.
Successfully defeating Jevil or compelling him to surrender will grant you either his knife or a unique piece of armor. Regardless of the outcome, Jevil ominously foretells doom for your party before vanishing.
While the loot may seem modest, these rewards can carry over into Chapter 2. Preserving your save files is crucial, given that items from Deltarune’s lore link back to Undertale, which cleverly remembers save data, even after deletion.
Before the release of Chapter 1 version 1.07, the Shadow Crystal wouldn’t appear in your inventory until conversing with Seam in Chapter 2. However, defeating Jevil also grants you a Shadow Crystal, a rare item only retrievable from this encounter and from Spamton NEO later on. Seam will note that these crystals, while invisible, still cast shadows, hinting at their significance.
With Deltarune now accessible on most contemporary gaming consoles, players can experiment with varying runs without the hassle of creating multiple accounts. However, consider the implications of your choices; a more aggressive approach may lead to less favorable endings. Until new chapters are released, continue honing your skills against Jevil and conquer this enigmatic boss.
