Dawn Robinson of En Vogue Opens Up About Living in Her Car Since 2022

Dawn Robinson Opens Up About Living in Her Car

Dawn Robinson, a former member of the iconic R&B group En Vogue, has revealed surprising details about her life over the past three years: she has been living in her car in Southern California. This revelation was shared in a candid video on her YouTube channel earlier this week.

A Glimpse into Robinson’s Past

At 59, Robinson was one of the founding voices of En Vogue, a group that dominated the music scene in the early 1990s with timeless hits like “Hold On” and “Free Your Mind.” After departing from the group for the second time in 2010, she appeared on the reality series R&B Divas: Los Angeles. The singer reunited with her former bandmates during the City of Hope Gala in 2019, but her journey has taken some unexpected turns since then.

Sharing Her Story

Titled “YOUR NEW LIFE IS IN THE SCARY,” Robinson’s latest video delves into her current circumstances. Reflecting on her past, she stated, “If you had said to me while I was in En Vogue, ‘You’ll be living in your car one day,’ I’d be like: ‘Huh, no, I’m always gonna have an apartment.'” She emphasized the tendency of people to dismiss their potential to adapt and overcome challenges.

A Personal Crisis

Robinson recounted how her living situation changed drastically in 2020 when she was living in Las Vegas with her parents. While this arrangement initially felt “wonderful,”tensions arose, particularly with her mother, leading to her decision to leave and sleep in her car for a month.

Eventually, a co-manager offered her a place to stay in Los Angeles. However, upon arrival, Robinson found the accommodations insufficient for her and her dog. After spending one night in a hotel, her stay stretched into eight months, during which time her frustrations grew over being unable to secure a more permanent living situation.

Choosing Life on the Road

After becoming increasingly disillusioned, Robinson explored living alternatives and discovered a community of people thriving in unconventional living arrangements, such as cars and RVs. “I was intrigued,” she shared, expressing a newfound interest in this lifestyle.

One pivotal day, she drove to Malibu, which has since become her home. As the sun set over the horizon, Robinson felt a mix of emotions—though her first night was daunting, she began to adapt to her new reality, learning the ins and outs of living in her vehicle.

Documenting the Journey

Importantly, Robinson clarified that her intention in sharing her experiences is not to gain sympathy or serve as a publicity stunt. She is currently filming her journey with the hope of compiling her experiences into a documentary, providing insight into her life and struggles.

Addressing her audience, Robinson touched upon the concept of the “Dark Night of the Soul,”referring to a time of isolation that can foster growth and self-discovery. “I wouldn’t trade my experiences for the world,” Robinson stated. “I miss my family, but I needed to do this alone, without judgment.”

Empowering Others

As she concluded her video, Robinson encouraged viewers to embrace spontaneity and pursue their own challenges, stating, “People are gonna call you crazy, and that’s okay. I’m crazy, and I’m proud of myself.” She reminded her audience that taking risks is often what leads to the most significant personal growth.

Robinson’s journey serves as both a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life and an inspiring call to action for others to seek their own paths, irrespective of societal expectations.
