David Tennant Discusses Advice from Former Agent to Avoid ‘Doctor Who’ Role

David Tennant’s Surprising Journey to Becoming the Doctor

In a revealing conversation on the podcast David Tennant Does a Podcast with…, acclaimed actor David Tennant disclosed that he almost turned down one of his most beloved roles: the Doctor in the iconic BBC series, Doctor Who.

The Initial Hesitation

During the episode, hosted by his wife Georgia Tennant, David recounted how his former agent advised him against taking on the role. Georgia recalled that David was approached while working on the miniseries Casanova, which was produced by Doctor Who‘s executive producers, Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner. They were in search of a new actor to succeed Christopher Eccleston in the 2005 revival.

“They decided to ‘lure’ David over to their house to preview some episodes from the first season,” Georgia explained, adding, “And then they go, ‘Guess what? Do you want to play [the Doctor]?'”

A Tough Decision

Reflecting on his decision-making process, David mentioned, “It was longer than that,” alluding to the fact that he took a moment to consider the enormity of the opportunity. However, it was clear to those around him that he was likely to accept the role. “Well, maybe I was clearly going to do it,” he acknowledged, “but there was definitely a moment where I wasn’t.”

David elaborated that around 40 hours after the offer was made, he struggled with the implications of such a pivotal role in a brand-new series. Interestingly, his then-agent, who has since retired, advised him against it, saying, “Don’t touch it. It’s not going to work.” At the time, she believed it wouldn’t succeed and cautioned that he wouldn’t want to be associated with a possible flop.

The Impact of a Bold Choice

Fortunately for both Tennant and his fans, his former agent’s doubts proved to be unfounded. David embraced the role and went on to portray the Tenth Doctor for three successful seasons from 2005 to 2010. He would later return as the Fourteenth Doctor for the 60th anniversary specials in 2023, cementing his status as one of the most iconic actors in the show’s history.

His journey reinforces the idea that sometimes, the biggest risks can lead to the most rewarding outcomes in one’s career.
