David Massey Retires After Seven Years Leading Arista Records
Sony Music announced on Monday that David Massey, a veteran in the music industry, is set to retire as the head of the iconic Arista Records, a position he has held for the past seven years. His departure marks a significant transition for the label, which he successfully re-launched.
Transition Period and Future of Arista
Massey will continue in his role until the end of June. While Sony Music has yet to disclose his successor, the company confirmed that a succession plan is in place to ensure that Arista operates as an independent label within its broader structure.
A Tribute to a Milestone Career
In his farewell statement, Massey expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with Sony Music CEO Rob Stringer, whom he described as a visionary leader. “Having started the label from scratch nearly seven years ago, I am incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished and the talented young artists we’ve supported,”Massey stated. He also conveyed confidence in Arista’s future growth.
Legacy of Arista Records
David Massey was appointed president of Arista in 2018, following the label’s closure by Sony seven years earlier. Originally established in 1974 by the esteemed Clive Davis, Arista has a storied history, having represented legendary artists such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Barry Manilow. Under Massey’s leadership, Arista has not only revived its legacy but also signed contemporary artists like JP Saxe, Lola Brooke, and the globally recognized Måneskin, who garnered a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
Prior Experience and Industry Impact
Before leading Arista, Massey served as the CEO of Island Records under Universal Music Group, where he played a pivotal role in the careers of artists such as Shawn Mendes, Demi Lovato, and Fall Out Boy. His extensive experience also includes a tenure as president of Mercury Records and various A&R positions within Sony Music.
A Fond Farewell
Rob Stringer paid tribute to Massey’s contributions, noting, “It has been a privilege to work with David on the rebirth of Arista. His influence in two different eras at Sony Music has been invaluable. As a respected executive and friend, I wish him all the best in his retirement, and I am confident that Arista will continue to thrive on the foundation he has built.”
As the music industry navigates through evolving trends, Massey’s impact on Arista Records is sure to resonate for years to come.
