David Ayer Discusses ‘A Working Man,’ Collaborating with Brad Pitt, and Anticipating the Release of His ‘Suicide Squad’ Cut

The Resurgence of David Ayer in Cinema: Spotlight on “A Working Man”

David Ayer’s upcoming film, The Beekeeper, set for release in 2024, has marked a significant turning point in his career, proving to be just what the doctor ordered. The action-thriller, featuring Jason Statham, has emerged as a critical success, grossing over $160 million against a modest budget of $40 million. This marked the filmmaker’s second-most successful film, occurring at a crucial moment following a tumultuous period after the 2016 release of Suicide Squad. Recognizing the potential of their fresh partnership, Ayer and Statham quickly re-joined forces for the upcoming film A Working Man, adapting Chuck Dixon’s first book in the *Levon’s Trade* series.

New Directions and Narrative Layers

Initially, Sylvester Stallone drafted the screenplay before handing it to Statham, who recognized the potential for a gripping narrative centered on a blue-collar worker, Levon Cade. In this gripping story, Levon must tap into his Royal Marines Commando past to rescue his boss’s kidnapped daughter, played by Michael Peña. Following the success of The Beekeeper, Statham was confident that Ayer would be the right director to reshape this script into a compelling film.

Ayer reflected on his vision during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating, “The rewrite was about adding a lot of the family layer and the warmth of it and relocating it to Chicago. It was originally set in Tampa, Florida, so there were all these little changes.” He emphasized his desire to inject his unique storytelling style into the narrative, feeling empowered by Stallone’s work.

Ayer’s Journey and Future Projects

In an earlier conversation with THR in 2024, Ayer had nearly lost hope regarding the release of his director’s cut of Suicide Squad. Although there has been little communication from DC Studios, he understands that James Gunn, the co-CEO, needs to solidify the new direction of the DC Universe before revisiting past projects.

Ayer expressed, “It’s absolutely fair for them to do that… just for the sake of everybody that worked on [2016’s Suicide Squad], it really does deserve to be seen.” While he is proud of his work, he also recognizes the challenges of navigating the legacy of the franchise.

On the Horizon: “Heart of the Beast”

While awaiting developments on his past projects, Ayer remains busy with the upcoming film, Heart of the Beast, featuring Brad Pitt, the star of Ayer’s critically acclaimed Fury (2014). The film, based on Cameron Alexander’s script, tells the story of an ex-soldier and his war dog stranded in the Alaskan wilderness. With Mauro Fiore as the director of photography, Ayer believes this film will deliver a rich cinematic experience.

“I got ahold of one of the best scripts I’ve ever read, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to direct this.’ I also couldn’t imagine anybody but Brad to do it,” Ayer shared, expressing his enthusiasm for the collaboration. This project promises to be an A-game film that strives to create a significant impact at the box office.

Dialogue with David Ayer: Insightful Reflections

We last spoke for The Beekeeper, and I was happy to see you get a win, both critically and commercially. Did you feel rejuvenated to some degree?

I did. I made that movie on a thesis of really making something for the audience and intentionally making a commercial film. At the same time, I was showcasing my filmmaker’s heart. And, to have that work, I don’t want to say I was surprised, but it was really reaffirming, for sure.

Reflecting on the collaborative process with Statham, Ayer remarked on their chemistry, indicating that they reinvented their approach for this new project. Ayer draws inspiration from the classics of ’80s and ’90s action films, aiming to bring depth to Statham’s role while allowing for more dramatic moments.

In a discussion regarding the screenplay transition from Stallone’s draft, Ayer noted the need to weave in family dynamics while relocating the story to Chicago, crafting a narrative more aligned with his style. He expressed excitement about working with Peña again, acknowledging Peña’s skills as an actor who expertly embodies his characters.

Exploring Themes and Future Opportunities

The dynamics in Ayer’s work often explore the shared humanity found in characters with complex backgrounds. In his latest projects, he aims to maintain these themes and sees the potential for sequels, especially with A Working Man.

As for the future of the DC universe and his cut of Suicide Squad, Ayer remains realistic and supportive of the new direction under Gunn, while still advocating for his version to be shared with fans, which he believes does great justice to his vision.

Looking ahead, with Heart of the Beast on the horizon and fresh opportunities in the pipeline, Ayer is ready to leave his mark once again on the cinematic landscape.

*** A Working Man is scheduled to hit theaters on March 28.
