Daredevil: Born Again Star Can Only Appear on Television, Not in MCU Movies

Overview

  • Daredevil: Born Again villains might remain exclusive to TV, with minimal chances of appearing in MCU films.
  • Vincent D’Onofrio cited significant challenges in transitioning characters from television to the film landscape, primarily due to ownership complexities.
  • D’Onofrio expressed his commitment to delivering quality performances across various projects, whether in TV or movie formats.

In a recent discussion, a star from Daredevil: Born Again shared insights regarding their character’s trajectory within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). They indicated that appearances may primarily be restricted to television formats, casting doubt on potential cinematic roles.

Daredevil: Born Again, the latest sensation on Disney Plus, serves as a continuation of Netflix’s Daredevil series. The show features a return of iconic actors from the original, including Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. Daredevil’s character has long been a crucial ally of Spider-Man, facing threats from a host of villains such as The Punisher and Kingpin himself. As fan excitement builds around their crossover into Tom Holland’s upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the hopes of many were dashed by D’Onofrio’s comments regarding their likelihood of appearing on the big screen.

During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s podcast, Happy Sad Confused, D’Onofrio discussed the recent casting announcements for Avengers: Doomsday. Despite the anticipation from fans, including the host’s eagerness to see D’Onofrio’s name associated with the project, hopes were dimmed when he stated:

“The only thing I know is not positive. Like, it’s a very hard thing to do to use my character in [an MCU film], and for Marvel to [use] my character, it’s a very hard thing to do because of ownership and stuff. I think, right now, I’m only usable for television series.”

D’Onofrio elaborated that while he might be open to different series formats, an immediate film appearance, even in a cameo, seems unlikely. He emphasized that the complexities surrounding character rights remain a significant barrier. With Sony retaining the rights associated with Spider-Man, Marvel Studios faces hurdles when wishing to incorporate characters like Kingpin into their film narratives. Notably, this dynamic has prevented other potential crossovers, as highlighted by Tom Hardy’s comments on Venom’s near involvement in a Spider-Man project that did not come to fruition due to “studio politics.”

It’s clear from D’Onofrio’s remarks that unless there are significant changes within the industry or a new agreement between Sony and Marvel Studios, fans shouldn’t expect to see Kingpin in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The movie rights for Spider-Man and related characters were sold to Sony Pictures back in 1999, and the studio is actively creating its own distinct cinematic universe featuring characters like Morbius and Kraven the Hunter. While the potential for collaboration exists, it would require a cooperative effort from both studios, particularly as Sony seeks to enhance its box office performance, which has been historically lower than that of the MCU.

For now, fans can catch the adventures of Daredevil and his compatriots as Daredevil: Born Again streams exclusively on Disney Plus.
