Daredevil: Born Again Episode 7 Review – Shocking MCU Twist for Muse After Intense Build-Up

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 1, episode 7.

Last week’s release of Daredevil: Born Again featuring a double episode drop was a delightful surprise, especially after episode 5 took a detour from the main narrative. Episode 6 marked the highly anticipated return of Charlie Cox in the Daredevil suit, culminating in an exhilarating battle with Muse. With the character’s rich comic book history, my excitement about his integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been palpable. Episode 7 brings confirmation that Hunter Doohan is the talented actor behind the dark persona of Muse.

This season of Daredevil: Born Again is thoughtfully crafted, drawing from a backdrop that was initially set to align more with a legal procedural than a typical superhero storyline. This nuance permeates the structure of the arcs, revealing the producers’ intent. While Muse has been a significant character, I find myself wishing for a more extended exploration of his narrative as we approach the climax of season 1.

Hunter Doohan’s portrayal of Bastion/Muse has been captivating, adding a layer of creepiness both masked and unmasked. The intertwining storylines such as The Punisher and White Tiger showcase how the series continues to develop characters while introducing new arcs, yet some of these stories, like Muse’s, are cut abruptly short.

I was genuinely surprised by the trajectory leading to Heather’s crucial involvement, particularly her unexpected act of killing Muse. This moment will surely resonate with her character moving forward, particularly as she had previously expressed her ambitions of writing about masked vigilantes and their identities. The combat sequences, especially the confrontation in Heather’s office, were skillfully executed. However, Muse’s untimely death felt reminiscent of the MCU’s trend of eliminating compelling villains prematurely, even though it opens new avenues for Heather’s story and the evolution of Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force.

In episode 7, Daredevil confronts Muse directly, leading to the anticipation of a tense encounter. Meanwhile, Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, navigates his own intricate storyline as mayor. This new position demands he adhere to the responsibilities that come with it, presenting a different view of the character as he works within a system of politics rather than just crime.

One captivating element of Daredevil: Born Again is how it explores the dynamics of Fisk’s relationship with Vanessa, magnificently portrayed by Ayelet Zurer. While she successfully took charge of his criminal empire during his absence, their relationship has evolved into a complex mixture of love and tension. Episode 7 initially suggests Vanessa may be plotting against Fisk through Luca, only to later imply she may have informed him of the threats.

I am eager to see how this subplot unfolds, as the ramifications of such a betrayal could be immense for Fisk. With Daredevil’s triumphant return and the Anti-Vigilante Task Force gaining momentum, the final two episodes of season 1 promise to be riveting. Earlier in the series, Fisk warned Matt that should he don the Daredevil suit again, their conflict would escalate, and episode 7 hints at an explosive retaliation from the mayor in response to Daredevil’s resurgence.

Daredevil: Born Again episodes are available for streaming on Disney+ every Tuesday.
