Daisy Edgar-Jones Reflects on Collaborating with Hollywood’s Leading Men
Daisy Edgar-Jones has taken note of the male co-stars who have garnered attention on the internet. Over the years, she has shared the screen with some of Hollywood’s most handsome actors, including Paul Mescal from Normal People, Harris Dickinson from Where the Crawdads Sing, Andrew Garfield from Under the Banner of Heaven, Sebastian Stan from Fresh, Glen Powell from Twisters, and Jacob Elordi from On Swift Horses.
In a recent interview with Elle, published on a Tuesday, Edgar-Jones discussed her experiences working with such desirable and highly-regarded actors.
“I have worked with basically all of the internet’s boyfriends. And I’m lucky that every actor I’ve worked with has been incredibly supportive of me being the lead. Glen, Sebastian, Paul — all of them. I think that’s why they’re so successful and so loved and so good: that they are so generous and they really serve the story and are not serving themselves,” she said. “Glen was always like, ‘What’s Kate’s journey in this? Let’s find it.’ And same with Sebastian; he was so completely invested in Noa’s journey. Paul’s like playing tennis with your best friend.”
Edgar-Jones expressed her concerns about future collaborations with male leads, acknowledging the pervasive ego issues within the industry that could impact her opportunities. She first captured global attention in 2020 with her portrayal of Marianne Sheridan opposite Mescal in the acclaimed limited series Normal People. This role, she insists, remains a topic she enjoys discussing.
“I want to find something that connects like that again,” she remarked. “I still can’t comprehend how widely it reached. Five years on, I’m older now and I’m keen to talk about other things, too.”
As she searches for new roles, Edgar-Jones aspires for her characters to be “complicated and deep” with rich layers, reflecting the complexities of human nature. She also addressed recent backlash regarding her character Kate in Twisters. Fans were disappointed there was no kiss between her character and Powell’s Tyler, which sparked considerable dialogue online.
“I know there was a big uproar that there wasn’t a kiss at the end. But she went on a journey in that film that was bigger than a romantic journey,” she explained.
Looking ahead, Edgar-Jones will reunite with one of her earlier co-stars, Andrew Garfield, in the upcoming film Voyagers, a biopic centered on the life of astronomer Carl Sagan. She humorously noted that now only “Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler” remain on her list of coveted male leads to work with!
