Renowned for his impactful works such as Cowboy Bebop, acclaimed director and creator Shinichiro Watanabe is back with an enthralling new anime titled Lazarus. This highly anticipated series promises to engage audiences, but interestingly, its initial concept differed greatly from its current format. Given Watanabe’s history of crafting compelling narratives, one can’t help but wonder how the project might have unfolded had it followed its original vision.
In a recent interview with Mantan Web, Watanabe discussed the genesis of Lazarus. Originally, he pitched an idea reminiscent of his earlier work, Space Dandy, only to be instructed to pursue a darker and more serious tone. The animation is handled by Studio MAPPA, famed for its hit titles Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, heightening expectations for this new endeavor.
The Evolution of Lazarus

Watanabe was approached for this project by Adult Swim producer Jason DeMarco, a devoted admirer of Cowboy Bebop. DeMarco’s enthusiasm led to an offer for complete financial backing for any anime Watanabe envisioned, but with one specific requirement for a more serious narrative. When Watanabe suggested a concept akin to Space Dandy, he received feedback steering him towards a tone that was both serious and dark, ultimately leading to the creation of Lazarus.
“They requested a sci-fi action series. When I proposed something like ‘Space Dandy’, the answer was no, they wanted a project that had greater depth,”Watanabe recounts. “Fortunately, there was minimal interference from the network, allowing me to unleash my creativity without restrictive directions. Generally, US collaborations entail considerable oversight, but this time, I was granted remarkable freedom.”

The narrative of Lazarus centers around a task force, tasked with locating Dr. Skinner, a scientist responsible for disseminating a deceptive miracle drug named Hapuna. Although marketed as a cure-all, this medication has a fatal side effect: it claims its users’ lives three years after consumption. In contrast, Watanabe’s earlier series Space Dandy chronicles the comical travels of its protagonist, Dandy, as he and his quirky companions explore the universe in search of uncharted alien species.

A New Perspective on Watanabe’s Work

Despite initial plans leaning towards a more light-hearted adventure, Lazarus stands as a testament to Watanabe’s creative prowess, free of external constraints. With impressive animation quality, a compelling narrative, and an unforgettable soundtrack, Lazarus is shaping up to be a significant addition to the anime landscape. The series, now airing, is gaining traction among fans and critics alike, making it a compelling watch for anyone interested in Watanabe’s latest venture.
