Confusion Grows After House Of The Dragon Showrunner Responds to GRRM’s Criticism About Major Targaryen Character Cut

Warning: This article includes spoilers for Fire & Blood, the source material for House of the Dragon.

Last year, George R.R. Martin stirred controversy among fans after he posted and subsequently deleted a blog entry critiquing House of the Dragon. This occurred amidst a mix of backlash regarding Season 2. Martin focused his comments on specific elements, particularly the alterations made to the storyline involving Blood and Cheese and the exclusion of Prince Maelor Targaryen, the youngest child of King Aegon II Targaryen and Queen Helaena Targaryen.

The Decision to Omit Prince Maelor Targaryen

Insights from Showrunner Ryan Condal

In response to Martin’s remarks, Ryan Condal expressed disappointment, emphasizing the collaborative efforts made with Martin throughout the adaptation process. However, as they delved deeper into production, conflicting views emerged, particularly regarding what adaptations were necessary:

“It’s this incomplete history and it requires a lot of joining of the dots and a lot of invention. I made every effort to include George in the adaptation process. We enjoyed a fruitful collaboration for a long time, but at a certain point, he just became unwilling to acknowledge the practical issues at hand.

Condal’s point is valid. Adapting a complex narrative like Fire & Blood is inherently challenging. The stories within require significant elaboration to engage viewers, which the series has managed to handle reasonably well. Yet, practical constraints, such as budget or storyline considerations, also influence decisions.

Nevertheless, the omission of Prince Maelor and adjustments to the Blood and Cheese narrative do not appear to stem from insurmountable difficulties, especially as finding another child actor should not pose a challenge for the production team. Condal has previously clarified:

“Maelor was not even born in the storyline at the time. We compressed the timeline in Season 1 to avoid re-casting every character. This meant that Aegon and Helaena’s children were portrayed younger. Moreover, we wanted to ensure that Helaena remains central to these impactful events, as she embodies innocence amidst the chaos.”

Potential Challenges in Season 3

The discussions from both Condal and Martin would carry less weight if the Blood and Cheese storyline had resonated as expected. This sequence was highly anticipated, yet it fell flat for various narrative reasons, including uncertainties surrounding Daemon’s involvement and the abrupt ending involving Helaena, Alicent Hightower, and Criston Cole. However, the significant underlying issue remains Helaena and the absence of Maelor.

The emotional depth of the scene is rooted in Helaena’s tragic decision, where her choice leads to devastating consequences. The adapted portrayal detracted from this impactful narrative moment.

It is crucial that Helaena’s experience is portrayed as visceral and harrowing, allowing viewers to connect with her emotional turmoil. With Maelor’s absence and Helaena’s characterization feeling somewhat distant, the intended impact seems diminished.

Moreover, the implications of Maelor’s exclusion carry over into Season 3. Martin mentioned the “butterfly effect”that arises from his absence and its repercussions on the plot. The lack of Maelor not only eliminates a vital death scene but alters Aemond’s claim to the Iron Throne and profoundly impacts Helaena’s narrative arc leading up to her demise. The risk lies in depriving viewers of pivotal emotional moments.

Is There Still Hope for Maelor’s Introduction in Season 3?

While I remain optimistic about the overall quality of House of the Dragon, the show has encountered challenges that stem from the significant alterations to pivotal storylines. Although many fans were divided on the pacing of Season 2, I believe much of the critique was unwarranted. Still, the shifts concerning Blood and Cheese remain perplexing.

Condal expresses confidence that these choices will unfold effectively, but does this mean Maelor will resurface? It is feasible that Helaena could have been pregnant during the Blood and Cheese events, but the timeline grows tight after that pivotal moment, as the tensions escalate leading to Aegon’s tragic fate.

While Maelor’s re-introduction within Season 3 is theoretically possible, it has become significantly more complicated compared to if he had been included in Season 1. The horrific nature of Maelor’s death in the source material would also pose challenges for adaptation, particularly if he is depicted as an infant.

If Maelor does not appear in Season 3, focusing on Helaena’s character development is crucial. Enhancing her storyline with elements like dragon dreams might add depth, but it must not overshadow her humanity. As it stands, her character risks mirroring Bran’s distance, leaving viewers unable to connect emotionally.

As filming for Season 3 is currently underway and set to premiere sometime in 2026, it’s imperative that the narrative remains engaging, regardless of Maelor’s presence. Adjustments must be made to ensure Helaena’s moments resonate as intended. If the story can deliver the emotional weight anticipated, it may provide justification for the alterations made to Blood and Cheese. However, failure to achieve this could lead to criticism that proves Martin’s concerns were justified.
