Concerning News on Amazon Prime’s Tomb Raider TV Series Adaptation

Overview of Current Challenges

  • Amazon’s adaptation of the iconic video game series Tomb Raider is encountering serious developmental hurdles, with no significant advancements in the past three years.
  • The production has already incurred costs in the tens of millions, yet a finalized script remains elusive.
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently attached to the project, but ongoing delays may compel Amazon to explore alternative writing options.

The television adaptation of Tomb Raider, a celebrated video game franchise since its debut in 1996, is reportedly mired in development complications under Amazon’s stewardship. The game, which follows the daring archaeological adventures of Lara Croft, was initially developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive for platforms like Sega Saturn and PlayStation. With its enduring status within the gaming community, Tomb Raider has frequently inspired spin-off media, including films. The latest live-action movie, featuring Alicia Vikander, was released in 2018 but didn’t achieve commercial success, casting uncertainty over future adaptations. In May 2024, Amazon announced a new live-action series as part of a collaboration with developer Crystal Dynamics, with Waller-Bridge leading the creative team. Unfortunately, production at Prime Video seems to be in disarray.

Tomb Raider Series Faces Significant Development Issues

According to a report by Matthew Belloni at Puck, the Tomb Raider TV adaptation is struggling significantly behind the scenes, with three years of stagnation in progress. Belloni notes that Prime Video has invested millions into the series but reportedly has “nothing to show for it.”Jen Salke, a former Amazon MGM executive and key overseer of the project, secured a lucrative $20 million annual deal with Waller-Bridge in 2019. Yet, the project has yet to gain traction, leaving many wondering about its future.

Belloni highlighted that Waller-Bridge’s development efforts have resulted in two writers’ rooms while failing to produce a viable script. Although there have been rumors regarding the involvement of Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, no official confirmation has indicated her withdrawal from the role, she remains associated with the project. Despite story details being scarce, Waller-Bridge has expressed a heartfelt connection to the character, having grown up with the franchise. This information contrasts sharply with statements Salke made to Variety last October, where she noted that Waller-Bridge was “well into it,”indicating optimism about the series’ trajectory.

There is speculation that Waller-Bridge’s commitment to other projects has delayed her focus on Tomb Raider, which could explain the prolonged development timeline. However, Prime Video may not tolerate this stagnation indefinitely and might consider appointing a new writer to expedite the adaptation process. Fans eagerly await clearer insights regarding the Tomb Raider series as developments unfold.
