How to Unlock Wolves and Foxes

Before the Wolves and Foxes quest appears in your objectives log, certain actions must be completed. Your first task is to defeat The Fox, one of the game’s prominent antagonists. Following this encounter, Akechi Mitsuhide’s storyline will be momentarily halted. You will then receive a prompt to advance Naoe’s personal quest line.

Additionally, you must successfully complete four Kuji-Kiri missions, which consist of brief flashback sequences that explore Naoe’s history. These missions are structured linearly and are relatively short. Completing all four will unlock the Wolves and Foxes mission within the Naoe section of your Objectives Board.

Mission Location and Key Characters

Your journey in this mission leads you to Uji Tawara, situated in the Yamashiro region. The mission activates automatically; just navigate through Naoe’s questline and follow the in-game marker. As you approach the vicinity, you will encounter Tokugawa Ieyasu, who is under assault by a faction associated with Mitsuhide’s clan. Your primary objective is to assist Tokugawa and his Iga defenders in repelling the attacking forces.

Engagement: Combat Strategy

Upon your arrival, combat ensues immediately—there’s no stealth involved. Engage the enemies directly and eliminate all hostiles in the area. Importantly, no reinforcements will arrive, ensuring that once the current group is defeated, the fight concludes.

Post-Combat: Interaction with Tokugawa

After vanquishing the enemies, approach Tokugawa for an interaction. During this conversation, you will encounter two dialogue choices:

  • We will be patient.
  • Patience will not stop Mitsuhide.

The choice you make does not alter the narrative path, so feel free to select either option and continue.

Follow-up with Hattori Hanzo

Following your conversation with Tokugawa, Hattori Hanzo will appear and lead you toward the water’s edge. Walk alongside him until he pauses to discuss matters further.

Once again, you’ll face two dialogue options:

  • My father was hiding a box.
  • It does not matter.

This choice does not impact the mission’s progress, so select whatever resonates with you.

Hanzo then presents you with additional choices:

  • Threaten Hanzo
  • Talk to Hanzo

Though the tone varies between these options, they will lead to the same narrative progression—Hanzo’s reaction remains unchanged, and the story continues as intended.

Rewards for Completing Wolves and Foxes

The quest concludes shortly after your final discussion with Hanzo. Successfully completing Wolves and Foxes grants you 1,000 XP and 20 Mon. More significantly, this mission sets the stage for the subsequent Secrets of the Blade mission, where Naoe’s arc is further developed, and you gain access to the Apprentice Assassin outfit.
