Classic Nintendo Controllers Expected to Arrive for the Switch 2

Overview

  • A new NES controller is rumored to be in development for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
  • The forthcoming console will feature limited support for older controllers, yet most existing Switch accessories should remain compatible.

Recent speculation indicates that Nintendo may introduce an updated version of the iconic NES controller designed to seamlessly integrate with the Switch 2. Fans got a more detailed glimpse of the Switch 2 during the one-hour Direct presentation on April 2. This event clarified that the Joy-Cons for the new console will connect through a robust magnetic system. As a result, the original Joy-Cons will likely not be compatible with the Switch’s successor, prompting community discussions about controller compatibility moving forward.

In response to these concerns, Nintendo recently published a compatibility list detailing which controllers and accessories will function with the Switch 2. Fortunately, many existing peripherals will continue to work with the new system. Players will be pleased to know that with the exception of the original dock, HDMI cable, charging stand, and Micro SD cards, most accessories and controllers from the original Switch can still be utilized on the Switch 2. However, some functions may be limited, particularly for the original Joy-Cons which will lose their HOME button functionality and cannot be charged using the new console.

While users have an alternative for their Joy-Cons, the same cannot be said for NES controllers. However, rumors circulating in the gaming community, particularly from notable leaker Nash Weedle, suggest that a new iteration of the NES controller may be on the way, fully compatible with the Switch 2. This development would allow gamers to avoid dependency on their older hardware for recharging, as a new controller option could provide a more convenient solution.

New NES Controller Versions Anticipated

Current NES controllers must connect directly to the console for charging, lacking a USB port. This means if players lose access to their original Switch or don’t have a charging station available, they could face difficulties maintaining power to their controllers. This is especially concerning for NES controllers, given their unique design. If the rumors hold true, gamers would have the opportunity to replace their NES controllers and continue enjoying classic retro games offered through Nintendo Switch Online on the new system.

Nintendo has consistently placed significant emphasis on its classic gaming legacy, integrating retro titles into their newest systems. One of the standout announcements during the Switch 2 Direct was the introduction of GameCube titles to the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) service—a long-requested feature among fans. Although the GameCube controller adaptation for Switch 2 may not be flawless, it nevertheless provides players with a more authentic gaming experience.
