Chances of GTA 6 Releasing on Nintendo Switch 2

Could Grand Theft Auto 6 Be Released on Nintendo Switch 2?

The gaming industry is buzzing with anticipation for two major releases set for 2025: Grand Theft Auto 6 and the highly awaited Nintendo Switch 2. While both titles promise to deliver an unparalleled gaming experience, the close release dates raise the question: Is there a chance that GTA 6 could be made available on the new Nintendo system? While the timing seems ideal, I remain skeptical about this prospect.

Assessing the Nintendo Switch 2’s Capabilities

The primary reason for my doubt about GTA 6 appearing on the Switch 2 lies in the specifications of the console. Although the Switch 2 provides a substantial upgrade over its predecessor, it still falls short of matching the power of current-generation consoles like the PlayStation 5. The characteristics of GTA 6 suggest it may not align well with Nintendo’s offerings, although the company has shifted its approach in recent years and may not mind as much as before.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to host significant titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring. This might suggest the potential for a solid GTA 6 port. However, it is crucial to consider that both of these games were originally designed for last-generation consoles, such as the Xbox One and PS4. Thus, the Switch 2’s capability to run them doesn’t necessarily establish it as powerful as current systems like the PS5. According to a detailed analysis by Analytics Insight, the technical specifications of Switch 2 are more comparable to the PS4 than the PS5.

Moreover, just because the Switch 2 can run Cyberpunk 2077, it doesn’t imply an optimal performance. Reportedly, the game runs at only 40 FPS while docked, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier in a post on Bluesky. While docked performance has its limits, handheld performance could be even less satisfactory.

Unlike other titles, GTA 6 is not designed for older consoles. Hence, I question whether the Switch 2 can manage to deliver the game’s groundbreaking experience. Even if it possesses enough power, a swift release on this platform seems unlikely.

With titles like Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition being tailored specifically for the Switch 2, it appears developers are working on dedicated versions for this hardware. Therefore, if Rockstar ever plans to release GTA 6 on the Switch 2, it will likely be a project that is not yet prioritized, as they focus on perfecting the game for existing platforms.

Additionally, historical patterns show that mainline GTA games rarely launch on Nintendo consoles, suggesting that Rockstar may target platforms with a more established user base. Furthermore, given that Nintendo is perceived as a family-oriented brand, their willingness to release a game like GTA 6 could present challenges. Although they have released titles like GTA: Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, the timing and context of previous releases likely influenced their decisions, as they were less controversial at the time.

In conclusion, while the advent of the Switch 2 brings exciting opportunities, the likelihood of seeing GTA 6 on the new system in the immediate future seems slim.
