Brandyn Barbara Artis, a talented actress known for her roles in key films such as George Lucas’ THX 1138 and Randa Haines’ The Doctor, passed away at the age of 81. Her friend, Karen T. Bolt, revealed that Artis succumbed to breast cancer on March 31 at her residence in Los Angeles.

Artis’ impressive career spanned both film and television. Notable television appearances included roles in productions like Man From Atlantis, The White Shadow, Knots Landing, Dynasty, and General Hospital. In her most recognized film role, she portrayed a hologram dancer in the groundbreaking 1971 film THX 1138, which marked Lucas’ directorial debut and featured stars Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence. Additionally, she had a supporting role as a nurse in the critically acclaimed film The Doctor, which starred William Hurt.

A Multifaceted Talent

Beyond her acting prowess, Artis was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a passionate storyteller. She penned the one-woman autobiographical play, Sister, Girl, which drew from her personal experiences during her battle with breast cancer; it was performed both domestically and on international stages. Additionally, she authored the romantic novel Running Barefoot in Paris, published in 2011, showcasing her diverse talents as an artist.

Artis was celebrated for her vibrant personality and flair, winning the Harper’s Bazaar/Estée Lauder “Fabulous at Every Age” contest. She leaves behind her daughter, Tracy, and her grandchild, Miuccia. Notably, her late husband, Larry Bunker, was a distinguished jazz percussionist honored for his collaborations with iconic musicians such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Diana Krall. Bunker passed away in March 2005 at the age of 76.
