Adolescence made waves upon its March 2025 debut, tackling serious themes related to incel culture and toxic masculinity in a gripping format. Currently, the potential for a second season is bright, as Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B Entertainment, is negotiating to further develop this impactful Netflix drama. The plot centers on the tragic murder of high school student Katie (Emilia Holliday), whose life is cut short by a 13-year-old classmate, Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper). Jamie’s insistence on his innocence raises chilling questions until damning video evidence emerges, drastically altering the narrative.

Though filmed in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, the haunting storyline of Adolescence resonated with audiences worldwide, achieving viewership of 6.45 million for its premiere episode within the first week alone. Each of the show’s four episodes was meticulously shot in a continuous take, allowing viewers to engage deeply with its complex themes. The series, created by Jack Thorne—renowned for his work on His Dark Materials and the stage adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child—and featuring the talents of Stephen Graham (This is England, Snatch, and The Irishman), was originally conceived as a limited series, although that vision may soon evolve.

According to Deadline, discussions about developing Season 2 of Adolescence are underway between Netflix and Plan B Entertainment, headed by Brad Pitt. Co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are engaged in talks with Philip Barantini, the show’s impactful director. Given the significant influence of the series on societal issues, it is unsurprising that renewed interest has emerged, especially amidst rising discussions about online safety, which have even brought the show’s creators to parliamentary dialogues.

In a recent interview, Jack Thorne expressed his hesitance regarding the continuation of Katie’s story, indicating a desire to preserve the story’s integrity. “I don’t think we’re the right people to tell Katie’s story,” he mentioned, suggesting that perhaps another creative team could explore compelling narratives surrounding Katie or similar characters. He acknowledged a hopeful openness to the idea of another company potentially stepping in to carry on the series while preserving its critical message.

Should Plan B take the helm, there is significant potential to elevate the storyline to new heights. Their experience with actors like Stephen Graham, alongside past successes, makes them an intriguing candidate for developing Season 2. However, it is essential that the continuation does not dilute the series’ vital messages; themes such as Jamie’s trial and the aftermath of Katie’s murder on her family must be duly addressed.

Adolescence is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
