Overview

  • In the latest arc, Boruto has experienced a significant time-skip, during which he trained extensively with Sasuke while confronting formidable foes like Code and Hidari.
  • Konoha has turned against Boruto, largely due to Eida’s Omnipotence ability, which has manipulated the memories of many.
  • Despite his true heritage as an Uzumaki, Boruto is referred to as an Otsutsuki by those whose memories have been altered.

Quick Navigation

Upon returning from a lengthy hiatus, Boruto takes on a new narrative as Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, officially marking the beginning of the series’ second saga. Fans have expressed confusion regarding the storyline, particularly in light of the numerous changes that resulted from the time-skip.

A particularly striking development since the conclusion of Boruto: Naruto’s Next Generations is the widespread animosity directed towards Boruto. What events transpired to cause such a dramatic shift in perception?

What Transpired During Boruto’s Time-Skip?

Similar to the original Naruto series, Boruto includes a time-skip dividing the narrative between Boruto: Naruto’s Next Generations (Part 1) and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex (Part 2, post time-skip). In contrast to how it was handled in the anime, the original manga continues simply under the title Naruto despite the time shift.

During this time-skip, Boruto evaded Konoha alongside Sasuke, dedicating years to intensive training. However, their journey took a turn when they encountered formidable adversaries, namely Code and his Claw Grimes. This confrontation culminated in Sasuke’s inexplicable transformation into a Divine Tree, leading to the creation of Hidari, one of the strongest humanoid Divine Trees introduced in the storyline.

In an unexpected twist, Boruto later aligns himself with and receives guidance from Koji Kashin, who possesses the ability of Prescience (or Ten Directions), allowing him to perceive different possible futures. Koji’s intention is to assist Boruto in navigating away from the darkest outcomes he has foreseen.

Why Is Boruto Targeted by Konoha?

The animosity towards Boruto in Two Blue Vortex stems from an ability introduced earlier in the franchise: Omnipotence. This ability, possessed by Eida (or Ada), arises from her DNA being modified by Amado, who tapped into the genes of Shibai Otsutsuki.

Eida’s Omnipotence operates without her conscious control. This shinjutsu, deemed the most potent of its kind, can alter perceptions and even bring desires into reality on a massive scale. Initially, Eida unwittingly charms those around her, searching for genuine affection before she begins rewriting the memories of virtually everyone on the planet.

Consequently, Eida orchestrated a swap in memories where Boruto is misremembered as Kawaki’s family. This manipulation led many to believe that Boruto is responsible for Naruto’s abandonment, falsely perceiving him as having killed Naruto. In reality, as revealed in the concluding chapters of Next Generations, Kawaki imprisoned Naruto and Hinata in another dimension to target Boruto, who was then under Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s control.

Despite this overwhelming misrepresentation, a few individuals, including Amado, recognize that something is amiss. Interestingly, Boruto remains hesitant to rectify these misconceptions, believing that maintaining the status quo might better protect Kawaki.

Is Boruto Considered an Otsutsuki, and Why?

At the conclusion of Next Generations, Boruto is resurrected through Karma extraction by Momoshiki, leading him to declare his status as a complete Otsutsuki. However, this is not the essence of why his moniker has shifted to “Boruto Otsutsuki”in Two Blue Vortex.

People now label Boruto as “Otsutsuki”primarily because of the memory alterations, with many forgetting that he is truly an Uzumaki—a clan that branched off from Kaguya Otsutsuki’s lineage. In contrast, Kawaki also shares ancestry, though he was initially raised by Kara with the intent of becoming Isshiki Otsutsuki’s vessel.
