Warning: SPOILERS for The Rookie season 7, episode 12, “April Fools.” In the twelfth episode of season 7, titled “April Fools,”The Rookie embarks on a thrilling Purge-inspired narrative. However, it’s disappointing to note that Bailey (portrayed by Jenna Dewan) is entirely absent from this storyline. Although the majority of the cast is engaged in dynamic arcs, Bailey’s absence stands out starkly. In this episode, Wesley (Shawn Ashmore) collaborates with Angela (Alyssa Diaz) and Nyla (Mekia Cox) to unravel a murder case, while John (Nathan Fillion) tackles the challenge of training a new rookie with notable clumsiness. Additionally, viewers witness promising developments in the Chenford romance, while Tim (Eric Winter) grapples with the chaos introduced by a problematic social media intern.
This action-packed episode is regarded as one of the best in season 7, particularly highlighted by a scene where anarchy takes over Los Angeles as criminals capitalize on a declared three-hour Purge. In an alarming turn, large sections of the city quickly ignite in flames. Yet, the absence of the show’s most adventurous firefighter, Bailey, becomes increasingly conspicuous as chaos unfolds.
Bailey’s Absence in The Rookie Season 7’s April Fools Episode
The City Could Have Benefited from Bailey’s Expertise

The impromptu Purge emerges following a misguided yet somewhat innocent prank from the LAPD’s new media intern, Libby. Initially, she tweets from the police account that all parking tickets will be forgiven for April 1st. However, after Tim reprimands her, she shifts to suggesting that anyone arrested will receive a “get out of jail free”QR code. Her impulsive tweet ultimately leads to her dismissal, prompting Libby to retaliate by announcing that all crime in Los Angeles will be permitted for three hours—a proposal the city’s criminals enthusiastically embrace.
While it may be unfair to label Libby as the worst character of season 7, her predicament is satisfying to watch unfold, especially when she is apprehended at the episode’s conclusion. Meanwhile, the streets devolve into chaos with arsonists wreaking havoc, including launching Molotov cocktails dangerously close to where Nolan is parked. Given the rampant destruction, Bailey’s and the LAFD’s conspicuous absence throughout the episode’s events is indeed puzzling.
Understanding Jenna Dewan’s Absence in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12
Two Possible Reasons for Bailey’s Absence

Bailey’s absence in “April Fools”is not explicitly explained, leaving it open to interpretation that her character may still be active off-screen, potentially managing the riots. On the other hand, one plausible reason for Jenna Dewan’s absence is her familial commitments. Recently, she mentioned on The Kelly Clarkson Show that she returned from maternity leave when her child was less than two months old, which supports the idea that she could miss occasional episodes to prioritize family time.

A less favorable explanation could suggest that The Rookie’s production team opted to trim Bailey’s character from the script to manage costs. With the episode’s heightened budget, evident through complex set designs and practical effects, excluding a character less integral to the crisis may seem a strategic decision to streamline expenses. Fortunately, Dewan is confirmed to return in the next episode, allowing for further developments in Nolan and Bailey’s evolving relationship, particularly concerning their ongoing adoption storyline.
The Rookie’s Purge-Themed April Fools Episode: A Missed Opportunity for Dewan’s Bailey
An Ideal Episode for Stunt Performance

While it remains unclear what Lisseth Chavez meant by hinting at an especially dark episode approaching, this installment could certainly qualify. The Purge theme would have provided a thrilling stage for Dewan to showcase her stunt skills. As she noted on The Kelly Clarkson Show, performing stunts ranks among her favorite job aspects, and a narrative filled with chaos aligns perfectly with her talents.
Bailey’s athleticism was a topic of admiration in a prior episode, exemplifying her daring leap from a moving SWAT vehicle onto a hijacked bus. Although it’s perhaps premature for The Rookie to escalate her stunts beyond this, the episode’s premise certainly suggested potential for more breathtaking feats. With six episodes remaining in season 7 and Bailey’s return confirmed, there are ample opportunities for her to shine in future adventures.
