Overview of Recent Tariff Effects on the Gaming Industry
- Anbernic has halted shipments to the US due to increased tariffs initiated during Trump’s administration, leading to a scarcity of certain gaming products.
- Square Enix has similarly paused US pre-orders for merchandise, highlighting a broader impact across the industry.
- Nintendo is shifting production of its Switch 2 consoles from Vietnam to the US as a strategy to mitigate tariff costs; however, the implications for pricing and availability remain uncertain.
In a recent development, Anbernic, well-known for its retro handheld gaming consoles, has ceased all imports to the United States following the imposition of international tariffs by former President Donald Trump. While consumers can still buy existing stock in US retailers, they can no longer import new products from China.
These tariffs, introduced several weeks ago, have created significant upheaval in global markets and supply chains. Targeting manufacturers in regions like China and Vietnam, the tariffs can reach as high as 145%, particularly affecting gaming consoles. Although certain electronics such as smartphones have been exempted, video game consoles remain subjected to these high duties.
Anbernic, a company recognized for its affordable Game Boy replicas, cited “changes in US tariff policies”as the reason for its shipment suspension. According to a report from The Verge, while current stock available in US warehouses can still be purchased, no new shipments from China will take place. Some of Anbernic’s offerings, such as the RG CubeXX and RG 406H, are exclusively sourced from China and are currently unavailable for US customers. The company is actively seeking effective solutions to address the issues faced by affected customers.
Limited Availability for Anbernic Consoles in the US Market

Anbernic is not alone in facing these tariff challenges; multiple companies in the gaming sector are feeling the pressure. For instance, Square Enix has also suspended pre-orders for merchandise in the US, although games remain unaffected for now. This situation could evolve, potentially impacting a wider range of products.
Nintendo has encountered significant repercussions from these tariffs as well. The company briefly paused pre-orders for its highly anticipated Switch 2 console in the US. However, reports indicate that pre-orders have recently resumed at previously announced prices.
Despite this reprieve, uncertainty looms regarding the availability and pricing of the Switch 2. Nintendo is reportedly redirecting a majority of its consoles produced in Vietnam to the US to mitigate the effects of the tariffs on Chinese imports. Only time will reveal whether this strategy will satisfy the demand for the new gaming console in the United States.
