Aaron Kwok Heads to Film in Comedy-Drama ‘IOU’ at Filmart

Aaron Kwok to Star in Heartwarming Comedy-Drama “IOU”

Renowned Hong Kong actor Aaron Kwok is set to headline the upcoming film IOU, a captivating drama directed by Steven Zhang Zhonghua. This project marks a reunion between Kwok and producer Julia Chu, with whom he previously collaborated on Port of Call (2015) and Where the Wind Blows (2022). The film is currently seeking international distribution at Hong Kong’s Filmart content market this week.

Film Synopsis and Themes

IOU draws inspiration from recent fundraising scams in China, delivering a narrative infused with both humor and poignancy. According to the producers, it serves as a satire on the selfishness often observed in a society driven by self-interest.

In the film, Kwok portrays Wu, a man at a crossroads between survival and morality. As he endeavors to settle his debts, Wu resorts to extreme measures, including holding two siblings captive in their remote Shaanxi home. His intention is to compel their father to repay the money he lent him. However, the innocence and compassion of the siblings lead Wu on an unexpected journey of transformation, culminating in a pivotal choice during Chinese New Year’s Eve.

Project Background and Production Details

Initially conceived in 2020, IOU was recognized as a Top-30 finalist at the 33rd Golden Rooster Film Project Market and participated in the industry program of the 20th Hong Kong International Film Festival. Filming commenced earlier this March, with a production budget estimated at around $3 million.
