Overview
- Former DC actors such as Jason Momoa are re-emerging in the revamped DC Universe.
- Jai Courtney aspires to reprise his role as Captain Boomerang in future projects.
- Director James Gunn’s history of collaborating with actors could pave the way for Courtney’s return.
DC Studios has embarked on a comprehensive reboot of its cinematic and television landscapes, yet this does not rule out the possibility of past stars making a comeback. Jason Momoa is transitioning from his established role as Aquaman to take on Lobo in the upcoming 2026 film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Another former DC actor, Jai Courtney, is expressing optimism about the potential to return to the DC Universe (DCU) as well.
After a lackluster decade marked by the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which concluded with the underwhelming performance of 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, significant changes were mandated. Following a period of mismanagement involving various high-profile figures such as Zack Snyder and Walter Hamada, the partnership of James Gunn and Peter Safran was introduced in 2022 to initiate a fresh start. With even prominent figures like Henry Cavill stepping aside, anticipation for the new DCU is building, especially with Superman’s arrival scheduled for July. As discussions surrounding the DC Universe intensify, actors continue to express their willingness to join the revamped initiative.
In a recent interview with Variety, Jai Courtney discussed his experiences portraying Captain Boomerang in past DC Films. Though his character met a grim fate early in James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad, Courtney still carries a torch for Boomerang. He reminisced, “Come on, man. Boomerang is cool,“and reflected on a conversation with Gunn, where the director suggested that a character’s death doesn’t mean they cannot return. “I have hope,“said Courtney.
“Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.”
Jai Courtney Holds Onto Hope for Captain Boomerang’s Future in the DC Universe

James Gunn is known for cultivating long-term collaborations with actors, creating an environment where those in his orbit can flourish. Notable names like Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion have established successful careers through their association with Gunn. While Jai Courtney has yet to solidify his standing within Gunn’s circle, his portrayal of Captain Boomerang was one of the few bright spots in the 2016 Suicide Squad. It remains uncertain whether he will return to reprise this role or explore new characters altogether. Nonetheless, his return could prove beneficial for both DC Studios and Courtney as he navigates the entertainment industry.
Jai Courtney initially shot to fame with a supporting role in 2012’s Jack Reacher and was heralded as a major up-and-coming talent in Hollywood. Since then, he has appeared in several franchises, including Die Hard, Divergent, and the DCEU. However, despite these opportunities, his career trajectory has not ascended as many anticipated, largely due to mixed reviews on his projects. Nevertheless, he continues to stay relevant, having recently starred in Netflix’s American Primeval and with a new role in the upcoming series War Machine alongside notable actors like Alan Ritchson and Dennis Quaid.
Even if a return to DC Studios does not materialize for Courtney, his consistent work in Hollywood is a testament to his enduring appeal—something not every actor can claim.
