Will Skull and Bones have microtransactions?

Ubisoft’s long-awaited pirate adventure game, Skull and Bones, is set to release soon. However, as with any Ubisoft release, fans are wondering if the game will feature any microtransactions. Here’s what you need to know.

Following numerous delays, Skull and Bones is finally releasing on February 16 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Amazon Luna. The game promises to deliver a 17th-century epic pirate adventure in which players can sail the ocean for single and multiplayer adventures.

This sounds promising enough, especially for Assassin’s Creed fans – after all, Skull and Bones was originally conceived as Black Flag DLC. However, modern gaming trends and publisher Ubisoft’s track record may have fans wondering if there will be microtransactions in this new release.

Here’s what you need to know about microtransactions in Skull and Bones.

Does Skull and Bones have microtransactions?

Yes, Skull and Bones will have microtransactions. These will be in the form of a premium currency for in-game purchases and a battle pass

Given that Skull and Bones is a full-price game costing $59.99 on PC and $69.99 on consoles, this has understandably caused some controversy, with players expressing frustration that the game is being treated as a live-service title with a pretty steep barrier of entry.

Ubisoft has responded to the criticism, with CEO Yves Guillemot defending the pricing during an investors call by calling Skull and Bones a “quadruple-A game” and saying both that it’s “a fully-fledged game” and “will deliver in the long run.”
