Earlier, various cultural artists, such as directors Bong Joon-ho and Jang Hang-joon, actor Kim Eui-sung, and singer Yoon Jong-shin, held a press conference on January 12 to demand a thorough investigation into the truth of Lee Sun-kyun’s case and urging clarification of the investigation process. They called for a thorough investigation by authorities into the truth of the Lee Sun-kyun case, deletion of articles that violate journalistic ethics, and amendment of current laws to protect the human rights of cultural and artistic figures.

In particular, Director Bong Joon-ho demanded a thorough investigation into the related personnel from the moment internal information about the deceased’s investigation was first leaked to the public until Lee Sun-kyun’s extreme choice.

Meanwhile, Kim Eui-sung pointed out that despite receiving a negative result in the precise drug test, Lee Sun-kyun underwent three police investigations, all of which were broadcast live by the media. The actor also criticized the release of a recording file that is difficult to confirm. Finally, Yoon Jong-shin said that it is inappropriate for the media to violate personal privacy of the deceased just because he was a public figure. He expressed the hope for the speedy deletion of article content that does not fit the purpose of public interest reporting.

On the other hand, Lee Sun-kyun, who had been under investigation by the police since his drug suspicion arose in October last year, was found dead in a parked car near a park in Seoul on December 27 of the same year.

After Lee Sun-kyun’s death, there have been criticisms about the media’s exposure of his private life, which has little relevance to the drug allegations, and police actions such as public summoning. With Lee Sun-kyun’s death, the police plan to close the investigation with “no right to indict.”
