Tongues of Madness serve as a unique reagent in Baldur’s Gate 3, offering players the capability to craft various potent elixirs. Unlike typical alchemical ingredients, these mushrooms take on the striking appearance of tangled tongues, and there’s a notable gameplay element — players must be cautious when using them, as they could potentially lock themselves out of early game quests.
Acquiring Tongues of Madness is quite straightforward, especially as players advance through the game. If you’re in search of these mushrooms for Omeluum’s quest or you aspire to concoct a special Psionic elixir, this guide will pinpoint their locations.
Locating Tongues of Madness in BG3

The first area where you can find Tongues of Madness is the Arcane Tower during Act 1. Specifically, you will discover them in the tower’s basement alongside Timmask Spores.
To gain access to the basement, equip the Guiding Light ring, which is also obtainable within the tower. Once adorned with the ring, return to the elevator where new buttons will appear; one of these will lead you directly to the basement, where you can find a Tongue of Madness resting on one of the tables.
While exploring the Arcane Tower, be sure to meticulously check all crates and barrels since you may uncover more Tongues of Madness or other valuable items.
In addition to finding them in the Arcane Tower, consider visiting key NPC vendors who may have Tongues of Madness available for purchase:
- Omeluum – Myconid Colony (available after completing his quest)
- Derryth Bonecloak – Myconid Colony (after reaching Level 6)
- The Nurse vendor at the House of Healing during Act 2
- Popper at Rivington’s Circus of the Last Days in Act 3
Utilizing Tongues of Madness in BG3

As previously noted, Omeluum, a Mindflayer located in the Myconid Colony, will request Tongues of Madness as part of a quest. However, these mushrooms have additional uses in the game.
Tongues of Madness are essential for crafting powerful Tadpole Elixirs, which grant users Advantage while imposing Disadvantage on enemies regarding several Saving Throws when they are influenced by an Illithid Power. To create these elixirs, you will require Essence and a Sublimate of Tongue of Madness, which you can produce by combining three Tongues of Madness.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Alchemy system allows all players, regardless of their class or level, to craft potions. To begin using this feature, open your character’s inventory and select the bottle-shaped icon located in the upper-right corner. Here, you will be able to choose the alchemical ingredients you wish to mix. If you have gathered the necessary components, select your Sublimate of Tongues of Madness along with any Essence to produce a Tadpole Elixir.
