In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, players can discover a multitude of items that enhance their party’s abilities. Numerous gear pieces and Pictos can either be located within the environment or dropped by formidable foes encountered throughout the various regions. Mastering Pictos and transforming them into Lumina is beneficial, making it advantageous to collect and master every Picto. Doing so allows for the Lumina option to be available in the future.
While many items are readily accessible, certain treasures are more elusive, often concealed within Paint Spikes. These distinctive large rocks, adorned with blue lines, are easily identifiable no matter where they appear in the game. Below is a guide on acquiring the essential skill, Paint Break, which enables players to shatter these Paint Spikes.
Acquiring Paint Break in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

To unlock the ability to destroy a Paint Spike, players must first obtain the Paint Break skill. This skill is granted as a reward for locating and returning four Lost Gestrals. These Lost Gestrals are scattered across the continent, and by speaking with them, you can guide them back to Sastro in your camp. Once you’ve successfully returned four Lost Gestrals, head back to Sastro to claim your Paint Break skill. By Act 2, once you acquire the Esquie ability to swim through Coral, you’ll find plenty of Lost Gestrals to help you achieve this goal.
Locating Sastro
Sastro can be found at your camp, which is accessible during your adventures in the overworld. Upon entering your camp, proceed past Esquie, taking the pathway to the left of where the Curator is located. Follow the trail through the rocks, and after spotting some wooden crates and a white sheet, veer left. Sastro will be directly in front of you. Engage with Sastro after returning the Lost Gestrals, and he will reward you for each one you successfully find.
Using Paint Break Effectively in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

After acquiring the Paint Break skill, it enhances your basic attack outside of combat. To break a Paint Spike, position it within the range of your attack and execute it. Upon breaking the rock, players can typically find a rare item where the spike was located. Paint Spikes are prevalent throughout the game’s major regions; thus, once you’ve gained this skill, it’s advisable to revisit earlier zones and destroy any Paint Spikes encountered. This strategy will yield gear and Pictos that are often superior to what’s available in that area.
