Mojang is diligently developing an exciting new graphical enhancement for Minecraft known as Vibrant Visuals. This update is scheduled for release alongside the summer game drop exclusively for the Bedrock Edition. While Mojang continues to introduce various features for both the Bedrock and Java Editions, it’s important to note that Vibrant Visuals will transform the visual aesthetics of Bedrock Edition significantly. However, it will lack a specific visual element that is currently unique to the Java Edition.
Understanding Environmental Fog in Minecraft Java Edition
What is Environmental Fog?

In Minecraft Java Edition, environmental fog previously operated under the shader fog code, functioning similarly to render-based fog. With the upcoming summer game drop, Mojang aims to distinguish between these two types of fog by enhancing the environmental fog, giving the game a refreshed appearance.
The environmental fog essentially dictates the fog density surrounding players. It dynamically adjusts based on the player’s environment, such as being submerged underwater, standing in lava, traversing different dimensions, or experiencing various weather conditions.
The recent update introduces a white haze effect that grows thicker as players venture farther from their current position. Particularly during rain or thunderstorms, this fog appears noticeably denser, as demonstrated in the image above.
This revamped environmental fog feature was recently implemented as a test in the Minecraft Java snapshot 25w19a. However, it has not yet made its way into Bedrock Edition or the upcoming Vibrant Visuals upgrade.
Vibrant Visuals: The Presence of Volumetric Fog

Despite the absence of environmental fog, Vibrant Visuals introduces volumetric fog. This type of fog is prevalent in many video games, as it enhances the realism of the immersive worlds.
Volumetric fog simulates the interaction of light with airborne particles, such as fog, dust, or smoke. This effect significantly enhances the atmosphere, allowing in-game light to scatter and interact dynamically with particles, providing a richer gaming experience.
The image above illustrates how volumetric fog contributes to a hazy atmosphere, with its color taking on a warm orange hue as the sun sets.
