Sebastian Stan Reveals How $65,000 from ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ Residuals Supported Him Before His MCU Career

Sebastian Stan: From Struggling Actor to Hollywood Mainstay

Today, Sebastian Stan stands as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after and respected talents, a far cry from his earlier career struggles. His breakthrough came with his iconic role as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger.

In an insightful interview with Vanity Fair, Stan recounted how he was at a low point, grappling with inconsistent work, when he received life-saving news from his business manager. “I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from Hot Tub Time Machine,”he shared.

This unexpected financial windfall, tied to his role as the ski-patrol bully Blaine, served as a pivotal moment in his career, giving him the stability he needed to pursue more significant opportunities. Prior to this, he had also appeared in 11 episodes of the popular series Gossip Girl.

Hot Tub Time Machine, featuring a cast of well-known actors like John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke, chronicles a group of friends who time-travel back to the ’80s via a magical hot tub and struggle to return to their present-day lives. The film also includes notable appearances by Crispin Glover and Chevy Chase, both of whom are associated with the theme of time travel.

Stan’s financial woes were short-lived, as he went on to reprise his role as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in a series of Marvel productions, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Additionally, he made uncredited appearances in Ant-Man (2015), Black Panther (2018), and will return as Bucky in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World (2025).

His career further expanded with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), where he shared the spotlight in a titular role, and he lent his voice to characterizations in the animated series What If…. Excitingly, Stan is set to star in future Marvel projects, including Thunderbolts and Avengers: Doomsday.

It’s safe to say that Stan has far exceeded that initial $65,000, carving out a lucrative niche within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, his artistic ambitions extend beyond superhero films. He has taken on diverse roles, such as rock icon Tommy Lee in Pam & Tommy, a young Donald Trump in The Apprentice, and leading the A24 feature A Different Man.

Stan’s willingness to tackle challenging roles has not gone unnoticed. Chris Evans, who stars alongside Stan as Captain America, commented, “You can see that in his choices. He takes big swings. When that Trump movie was kicking around, I thought, who is going to take this job? And I was so unsurprised when I heard it was Sebastian.”

His portrayal of the controversial Trump earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, while his role as the Mötley Crüe drummer garnered him an Emmy nomination. Additionally, he won a Golden Globe for his performance in A Different Man, solidifying his reputation as one of the most versatile actors in the industry.

As Stan continues to evolve in his craft, his journey from financial uncertainty to critical acclaim sets a powerful example of resilience and ambition in the entertainment industry.
