CBS Expands Lineup with New Series for 2025-26 Season
CBS has announced the addition of two new series for the upcoming 2025-26 season, giving the green light to a captivating drama titled Einstein and a humorous comedy entitled DMV. These series mark the beginning of CBS’s 2025 development projects.
Overview of New Shows
The drama Einstein is helmed by Andy Breckman, the mind behind the hit series Monk. It features Matthew Gray Gubler, noted for his role in Criminal Minds, portraying the titular character. Gubler is joined by Rosa Salazar, who adds her talent to the cast. Meanwhile, DMV is a single-camera comedy centered around the daily lives of employees at a motor vehicle office, starring Harriet Dyer and Tim Meadows. Both series will be produced by CBS Studios.
Current Developments in CBS Programming
These recent series orders are the first to emerge from CBS’s development slate this season. They join other new projects, including Sheriff Country, which was ordered last year, and the straight-to-series offerings Boston Blue and CIA. Notably, these prior shows are spin-offs of popular or recently concluded CBS series such as Fire Country, Blue Bloods, and FBI.
Series Cancellation Announced
Alongside the new additions, CBS has decided to cancel two shows: the first-year comedy Poppa’s House and the competition series The Summit.
A Closer Look at Einstein
The series Einstein is inspired by a German television program and follows a long history of adaptation attempts, including two previous efforts by CBS and one by NBC. The latest initiative comes after an unsuccessful attempt in 2019 led by Breckman and director Randy Zisk. The storyline revolves around Lewis Einstein (Gubler), portrayed as a “brilliant but directionless” great-grandson of the legendary scientist Albert Einstein. In a twist, he finds himself entangled in legal issues and is coerced into assisting a detective, played by Salazar, as she navigates complex criminal cases.
The executive production team includes Breckman and Zisk alongside Tariq Jalil, Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia, and Laura Beetz from Seven One Studios International.
Introducing DMV
DMV is crafted by creator Dana Klein, recognized for her work on Friends and 9JKL. The comedy draws inspiration from a short story by writer Katherine Heiny and focuses on the overworked and underpaid staff at a DMV office. The ensemble cast includes Dyer (from Colin From Accounts and American Auto), Meadows (known for The Goldbergs and SNL), as well as rising talents Molly Kearney (SNL), Alex Tarrant (NCIS: Hawai’i), Tony Cavalero (The Righteous Gemstones), and Gigi Zumbado (The Rookie).
Klein serves as the showrunner with Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling, and Robyn Meisinger as executive producers. Trent O’Donnell directed and produced the pilot episode.
