For four frustrating years, Williams consulted ten different doctors, each time seeking answers for debilitating symptoms such as persistent fatigue, aching limbs, and chronic diarrhea. Initially misdiagnosed with conditions like lupus and perimenopause, she ultimately received the alarming news that a rare cancerous tumor had been discovered in her pancreas.
“If someone had fucking well diagnosed me in the four years I’d been saying I was ill… then one operation possibly could have cleared the whole thing and I could describe myself as cancer-free, which I cannot now ever be.”
Advocacy and Awareness
Now, as she advocates for Pancreatic Cancer UK, Williams is not only raising awareness about the disease but also pushing for donations to support further research and treatment. Despite undergoing multiple procedures to remove the tumor, the delayed detection meant that cancer had already metastasized to her liver. She describes the ongoing battle against new metastases as a game of “whack-a-mole,” illustrating the unpredictable nature of her condition.
Coping with Uncertainty
Williams shared candidly how she copes with devastating news. “I go in like a puppy with this optimistic, bright face and then they give me bad news. It’s like, oh my God, I fell for it again,” she remarked. Each diagnosis often coincided with significant moments like Christmas or summer holidays, adding emotional weight to the news. Over the past three years, metastases have often appeared near major blood vessels, complicating treatment options further.
Innovative Treatments
Throughout her treatment journey, Williams has undergone targeted internal radiotherapy with Lutathera, specifically designed to combat her condition. She vividly described a typical procedure: “I go to a room in King’s College hospital, and people in hazmat suits come in with a lead box of radioactive material, which they inject into me, making me radioactive.” Although this treatment was intended to provide her with potentially years of relief, the expected outcome did not materialize as hoped.
