Yaya DaCosta, the former star of Chicago Med, recently shared her thoughts on her character, April Sexton’s departure from the show, as well as the potential for her return to the franchise. Since its launch in November 2015, the third installment of the One Chicago franchise has captivated audiences for ten seasons. DaCosta portrayed April from the very beginning, exiting in season six and making a special guest appearance in season eight.
In a revealing interview with TV Insider, DaCosta reflected on her time in the series, expressing gratitude that fans remember April so fondly, despite her departure from the main cast years ago. She candidly addressed the prospects of April returning, stating that her last appearance in season eight felt conclusive for her character. Here’s what she had to say:
It has been years, and I still get that so often. It warms my heart so much to know that even in an ensemble cast where every character was significant that people still felt the impact of April Sexton and still feel her absence even though the show continues. It moves me. I don’t foresee her returning to the show.
I think when I left the first time, there wasn’t any effort put into nicely tying up the storyline. So, when Dr. [Ethan] Choi left, it was a great opportunity for me to come back for a few episodes, get married to him, and go off into the sunset on our mission. I really love that ending. I think it did feel like an ending.
Impact on April’s Chicago Med Legacy
The Character’s Enduring Popularity

April Sexton may have first left Chicago Med in May 2021 and departed for the last time in December 2022, but her influence on the series remains strong. Even if DaCosta does not return, it is clear that April will leave an enduring legacy. As one of the show’s standout characters, she has been pivotal in many of its most memorable episodes, showcasing her depth and complexity.
With her marriage to Ethan Choi, there seems to be little need for April’s character to reappear in the One Chicago universe. Her status as a beloved fan favorite is not only rooted in her long-term presence but also enhanced by her impactful crossover appearances in three episodes of Chicago P.D.. While DaCosta expressed a deep connection to her character, she maintains that April’s story arc feels complete.
Considering a One Chicago Return for April
Possibilities for a Return

While Chicago Med features many iconic characters who could plausibly return, April Sexton’s story seems to have naturally concluded with her emotional farewell and marriage to Ethan. DaCosta echoes this sentiment, suggesting that a return might not be necessary for her character. However, given the procedural nature of the show, no possibility should be entirely dismissed. If Chicago Med is renewed for a season 11, there remains a chance for a surprising reappearance of April.
