Since its initial release in late 2019, this notable remastered title from Ensemble Studios has witnessed four significant expansions. The latest, known as Age of Empires 2: DE – Chronicles: Battle for Greece, emerged in November 2024, showcasing the game’s vibrant and engaging historical content.
Five months later, publisher Xbox Game Studios has announced another thrilling expansion, The Three Kingdoms. This upcoming DLC will feature five new civilizations: Shu, Wei, Wu, Jurchens, and Khitans. Players can expect an enriching experience with three additional campaigns and six new units planned for inclusion.

The expansion will introduce innovative units to the gameplay, including the heavily armored Hei Guang Cavalry and Traction Trebuchets, which serve as mobile siege engines capable of devastating distant foes. Additionally, the Lou Chuans, nicknamed the “floating fortress,”will overpower both ships and buildings alike. Players can also look forward to the new Dragon Ships and units like the Fire Lancers and Rocket Carts.
Each of the three new campaigns will delve into a specific civilization. The campaigns titled Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and The Sun Clan are designed to provide engaging narratives filled with themes of warfare, betrayal, and intrigue, making for exciting gameplay.

The expansion The Three Kingdoms will launch with a retail price of $19.99 on May 6. However, players can take advantage of a 15% discount by pre-ordering through Steam or the Microsoft/Xbox Store. PlayStation users can pre-order it as part of the Premium Edition of Age of Empires 2: DE for PS5, priced at $99.99, which will also launch on May 6.
In addition, a significant update for the base game is anticipated before the end of April 2025. This update will enhance castle visuals, refine the technology tree interface, implement balancing adjustments, introduce new maps, and add features like random map scripting, ensuring an enriched gaming experience for all players.
