Overview of the Future of the Diablo Franchise
- Blizzard is strategically planning the future of the Diablo series with a long-term vision.
- Although past releases have had lengthy gaps, this foresight offers promising developments for the franchise’s fans.
Rod Fergusson, the head of the Diablo franchise, has recently shared insights concerning the long-term outlook for this beloved action RPG series, emphasizing that Blizzard is actively planning for future installments. Given the sustained popularity of Diablo, it’s no surprise to its dedicated player base that the company is looking ahead.
The latest entry, Diablo 4, has garnered significant acclaim, making it one of the standout games in the franchise. Launched in 2023, Diablo 4 remains a top contender in the action RPG genre, largely thanks to its consistent seasonal updates that keep players engaged. However, some player dissatisfaction has arisen regarding the roadmap for 2025, with critiques suggesting it may not meet the high expectations set by earlier content. Despite these concerns, the game is on a positive trajectory, having improved considerably since its launch.
In a recent interview featured on Game File, Fergusson addressed inquiries about the franchise’s future. Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill posed questions about upcoming milestones and titles for Diablo. Though not providing extensive details, Fergusson revealed, “We’re here for the long haul. We’ve been doing long-range planning recently. I’ve created a roadmap – a 10-year roadmap… it was actually a 12-year [roadmap]… We’re focused on what players want… I can’t tell you much more than that.”This revelation suggests that aside from ongoing work on Diablo 4, Blizzard is also committed to crafting the future of the series.
Future-Proofing the Diablo Franchise

Traditionally, the Diablo franchise has seen significant gaps between releases, with a notable 12-year wait between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, followed by an 11-year interval before Diablo 4. While these delays can be frustrating, they often result in highly polished and innovative games. Fergusson’s mention of a comprehensive 10 to 12-year planning timeline suggests that he may have insights into when future titles might emerge, even if that timeline is still distant.
Turning to the immediate future, there are exciting developments on the horizon for Diablo 4. The highly anticipated Season 8 is set to launch later this month—barring any unforeseen delays. Early feedback from the Public Test Realm (PTR) indicates that this new season will present a heightened challenge compared to its predecessors, addressing community feedback that the progression to endgame content had been overly simplified. Players can look forward to facing the classic foe, Belial, as he reappears with the launch of Season 8 on April 29.
