While Luffy is known for his carefree disposition and lack of concern over his parentage, the fans are far more intrigued about the mystery of his mother. It is common knowledge that Dragon is Luffy’s father, yet the fate of his mother continues to be an unanswered query in the series.

Oda has yet to provide clues regarding Luffy’s mother being alive or dead, leaving fans in suspense. There’s little doubt, however, that Oda plans to eventually illuminate the circumstances surrounding Luffy’s familial connections. It’s likely that as Dragon’s backstory unfolds, Luffy’s mother will also take center stage.

Despite the limited information available, Oda has addressed questions concerning Luffy’s mother on several occasions. During one of these interviews, he suggested that she might still be alive, providing hope for fans eager to learn about her story. Here’s a glimpse of what Oda shared:

Q: What was Luffy’s mother like? Was she beautiful? What happened to her? Did she die when Luffy was a baby?

Oda: I think she’s alive. I’m still thinking hard about this. [Laughs] But if she does appear in the story, then she’ll be a very tough-looking woman. And strict. There’s no way that she’s a beautiful mother. She’s got this typical middle-aged woman’s permed hair… Speaking about families, I did a backstory of Nico Robin and her family. That was actually the first time for me to draw a mother in a character’s memory. Up until that point, I’d never drawn a blood relation.

From Oda’s remarks, it’s evident he has a clear vision of Luffy’s mother’s character. The circumstances surrounding why Luffy remains unaware of her existence are likely tied to the ideologies of Dragon, who may consider parenthood a vulnerability, explaining their decision to keep Luffy away from her.

Although Luffy’s mother has yet to appear, it’s widely anticipated that Oda will introduce her as the saga progresses. The forthcoming exploration of Monkey D. Dragon’s backstory is expected to reveal pivotal details about his past, his connections with the Navy, and notably, his relationship with Luffy’s mother.

The significance of Luffy’s mother should not be understated; her character is likely to play a crucial role, adding depth to both Luffy’s story and that of his father.
