Gabriel Macht’s Unexpected Return as Harvey Specter
After concluding his celebrated role as Harvey Specter in the hit USA drama Suits in 2019, Gabriel Macht never anticipated stepping back into the shoes of the dapper lawyer. Following nine successful seasons, he chose to take a step back from acting, focusing on family life and parenting his two young children. As time passed, Macht found himself gradually distancing from the Hollywood persona that had catapulted him to fame.
However, in the summer of 2023, amidst widespread strikes affecting actors and writers across Hollywood, the landscape for Suits dramatically shifted. Netflix secured the U.S. co-streaming rights, enhancing the show’s accessibility beyond Peacock, where it had previously been available. This resurgence breathed new life into the legal drama, centered around the charismatic attorney’s questionable decision to hire Mike Ross (played by Patrick J. Adams), a gifted college dropout. By the end of the year, Suits accumulated an astonishing 57.7 billion minutes of viewing time, solidifying its status as the most-watched title ever acquired by a streaming platform.
Macht, like many of his fellow cast members, found himself astonished by this unexpected revival. He suspected that series creator Aaron Korsh might explore expanding the universe of Suits with new legal protagonists. Sure enough, while working on the forthcoming spinoff Suits LA for NBC, Korsh approached Macht about returning for a brief three-episode storyline, proposing a connecting arc between Harvey and the new lead character, Ted Black, portrayed by Stephen Amell.
“I thought, ‘This could be a great way to give back to the fans who are eager for more of this character. If I can contribute to the show’s success, that would be a nice way to pass the baton,” Macht explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He also noted that the production team found a way to accommodate his family obligations, facilitating his return to the iconic role.
The Intriguing Backstory in Suits LA
In the storyline, set during a pivotal moment in 2010, Ted Black was a federal prosecutor while Harvey was still employed by the District Attorney’s office before moving on to work with the formidable Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres). Notably, fans of Suits will remember Harvey’s love for baseball, which ties into his relationship with Ted, as they played together on a recreational league team. Following a playoff game, Harvey assisted Ted by providing critical information regarding a mobster threatening Ted’s brother, Eddie (Carson A. Egan), ultimately helping him secure a conviction.
As the narrative unfolds, Harvey motivates Ted to confront this threat once more, igniting a partnership between the two as they pursue justice against the mobster in present-day Los Angeles.
Reflecting on His Suits Legacy
Macht delves into his motivations for returning, emphasizing his desire to support Suits and his bond with fans eager for more of Harvey’s character. He notes, “The commitment from fans has been astonishing. I’ve met individuals who have re-watched the series multiple times. This resurgence can largely be attributed to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where snappy clips featuring Harvey’s witty lines and memorable moments have gone viral, driving viewers to Netflix to discover the show anew.”
He expressed his amazement at the ongoing momentum of the series, indicating that such digital engagement had rejuvenated interest in the show and created new opportunities for his career. When Korsh approached him with the idea of revisiting Harvey in a new narrative context, Macht was intrigued by the potential to expand the existing character dynamics.

Macht believes that audiences will appreciate how Harvey has matured, promising moments that resonate positively with devoted fans. “I think viewers will enjoy seeing Harvey’s journey and how he navigates these relationships moving forward,” he says.
The Enduring Bond: Harvey and Mike
The camaraderie between Harvey and Mike has captivated audiences, showcasing a nuanced male friendship rarely depicted on screen. Reflecting on his on-screen rapport with Patrick, Macht suggests that the blend of mentorship and mutual growth between their characters struck a chord with viewers. This bond remains a timeless aspect of Suits that continues to resonate.
Harvey: A Complex Antihero
As a cultural icon akin to other male antiheroes, Harvey Specter elicits mixed feelings regarding masculinity’s portrayal in media. Macht concedes that while Harvey embodies certain toxic traits, he also possesses depth and vulnerability that people connect with. While acknowledging the character’s flaws, Macht emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and evolving beyond harmful behavior.

A Farewell or a Return?
With his recent decision to return primarily honoring the fans, Macht remains open about the future. “For now, I believe this short arc is an appropriate way to celebrate Harvey’s legacy,” he states, indicating his satisfaction with how the narrative played out. However, he remains receptive to future opportunities if they arise, encouraging fans to stay engaged with the evolving Suits universe.
Macht is currently focusing on his entrepreneurial ventures, including his whiskey brand, Bear Fight Whiskey, while cherishing family time. Yet, he admits, “If the stars align and Aaron reaches out about another chance, I’d be open to it.”
