The Apothecary Diaries: How a Single Change Altered Jinshi’s Original Vision

Within the intricate narrative universe of The Apothecary Diaries, the character Jinshi stands out not just for his striking appearance but also for the enigmatic qualities he embodies. Initially conceived in a somewhat spontaneous manner by author Natsu Hyuuga, Jinshi’s character was not always defined. In fact, his development has been significantly influenced by the enthusiastic reception from readers, prompting Hyuuga to reshape his role and personality over time.

“I thought that [since this is a shoujo manga-style novel, let’s have a handsome man in it, even if just for appearance], so I introduced him with that kind of light-hearted feeling. Regarding his identity, I had two options in mind: make him a eunuch, or… In the end, I decided to leave it up to the readers to decide. As he turned out to be popular, I decided to revise the direction and personality. Initially, I had considered a direction in which Jinshi dies, but that was also scrapped.”

Upon his debut, Jinshi was not designed to be a protagonist or hold significant narrative weight. Natsu Hyuuga later acknowledged that his inclusion was primarily for visual allure, envisioning him as an archetypal handsome figure that aligned with the story’s aesthetic. Initially, his character was left undefined, intended more as a decorative narrative element than a fully fleshed-out individual. It was only after receiving enthusiastic feedback from the audience that his arc began to evolve.

Hyuuga considered making Jinshi a eunuch, which would have added layers of intrigue and ambiguity to his character. By intentionally leaving parts of his backstory unclear, she sparked speculation among fans. This deliberate vagueness fostered a mysterious persona for Jinshi, significantly enhancing his appeal. As audiences became more intrigued by his storyline, it became essential to develop his character further, providing him with a more prominent and meaningful role.

Teaser for Apothecary Diaries Season 2

Jinshi’s growing popularity not only ensured he remained in the storyline but also prevented his potential demise — an original plot direction that would have dramatically shifted the narrative course. As Hyuuga noted, the character was initially at risk of being written out entirely due to his superficial role. However, as he garnered a devoted following, the author swiftly adapted, opting to deepen his character exploration and interactions within the palace’s intricate social tapestry alongside Maomao, the astute heroine of the series.

This newfound depth in Jinshi’s character not only transformed his relationship with Maomao but also injected emotional depth and romantic tension into the narrative. What began as a simple inclusion morphed into a dynamic character whose journey intricately intertwined with pivotal plot developments, illustrating the profound impact of audience engagement on storytelling. It exemplifies how The Apothecary Diaries could have unfolded in an entirely different manner had reader responses not played such a vital role.
