Warning: SPOILERS for Doctor Odyssey episode 14. Doctor Odyssey continues to navigate its path as a medical melodrama, but the recent twist in episode 14 may represent a significant misstep for the series. Centered on a luxury cruise ship captained by Robert Massey (Don Johnson), the show spotlights the close-knit medical team, comprising Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson), Nurse Practitioner Avery Morgan (Phillipa Soo), and Nurse Tristan Silva (Sean Teale). While the trio encounters outrageous emergencies on the open sea and during picturesque port visits, the core tensions stem from the characters’ interpersonal dynamics.
Unfortunately, not every plotline within Doctor Odyssey has made waves of success. The series notably missed the renewal list by ABC for the 2025-26 season, leading to speculation about its future direction. Theories surrounding Doctor Odyssey’s narrative arc even suggest it might be a “coma dream,”which, while undermining the value of its emotional storylines, could provide a rationale for its star-studded cameos like Shania Twain and John Stamos. Regardless of these theories, the show’s recent developments regarding Avery’s supposed pregnancy distinctly feel unconvincing.
Avery’s Pregnancy Plot Twist: A Disappointment
Underlying Condition vs. Actual Pregnancy

The love triangle among Avery, Tristan, and Max has been a focal point, culminating in a surprising three-way encounter in episode 6. Shortly after, Avery’s pregnancy test revealed a positive result, spawning heated debates among the trio about paternity and parental desires. Although Avery expressed intentions to carry the pregnancy to term, episode 14 introduced a shocking revelation: her positive pregnancy tests were attributed to an ovarian cyst, nullifying the prospect of motherhood.
This twist, foreshadowed earlier in episode 12, implied that a similar condition could lead to misleading pregnancy hormone results. Ironically, while Heather’s pregnancy was confirmed in this episode, Avery’s turned out to be a mere illusion. The emotional fallout left all three characters grappling with grief over a child that was never on the way. Given the extensive setup devoted to this storyline, such a twist is nothing short of disappointing.
The Disappointment of Avery’s False Pregnancy
The Narrative Feels Empty

The convoluted dynamics of Doctor Odyssey’s love triangle have not been its strongest narrative element. However, resolving Avery’s pregnancy so abruptly feels like a squandered opportunity. The love triangle—and by extension, Avery’s pregnancy—has been the foremost ongoing narrative in the first season. Countless scenes explored future aspirations, conflicts regarding parenting, and personal growth. Tristan’s commitment to beating alcoholism to become a better father figure was pivotal, just as Avery’s journey towards motherhood and medical school represented major character development.
With myriad possibilities for concluding Avery’s pregnancy storyline, reverting to the notion that it was never real comes across as a missed opportunity. The recent developments render previous conflicts as mere filler, stripping the narrative of its gravitas. Avery’s arc has been portrayed through the prism of potential parenthood—only to ultimately reveal it as an illusion.
Improving Avery’s Pregnancy Narrative
Exploring Alternatives

Instead of hastily concluding Avery’s pregnancy arc, Doctor Odyssey could have handled it with more nuance. The rapid transition from revelation to conflict to an unsatisfactory conclusion felt rushed. Given the talent of its cast, especially likely further insights from Phillipa Soo, Avery’s dilemma could have been the centerpiece of an episode focused on her internal struggles.
Many argue that the pregnancy subplot should never have been initiated; however, hindsight provides clarity. Doctor Odyssey could have woven a more cohesive finale, allowing Avery to navigate the complexities of carrying a child and facing the emotional aftermath of competing paternal instincts from Tristan and Max. Alternatively, exploring a miscarriage or complications would have lent depth to the narrative, making it more poignant and deserving of the powerful performances from the cast. Rather than the shocking twist of “Surprise! There was never a baby!” Doctor Odyssey could have shaped a more meaningful conclusion.
